Chapter 1
*Puppy's POV*
My mother and father have been
chained to a tree all their lives. Mother
is only allowed to move around the back yard freely when she gives birth to puppies, while father stays on the chain all year round. When the time comes, owner lets her off the chain so she can go to the somewhat safe spot behind the bushes with the crudely-built dog 'house' and deliver her puppies. I was the runt of her 5th litter, and everyone thought I wouldn't make it, but somehow I managed to pull through. Even though Owner had never cared much for us, he seemed eager to help me survive. He gave mommy twice as much food as usual- food meaning the leftovers of his takeaways or frozen dinners.
Seven weeks later owner put mommy back on the chain. At first I wondered why, but quickly resumed to playing with my siblings. As I was about to wrestle with my sister, a hand, that seemed to appear out of nowhere, swooped her up, along with my brother.
Not knowing what was going on, I nipped at Owner's foot. He kicked me away cold heartedly, but that didn't stop me from following him. He went inside and slammed the door shut, but I could still see through the glass. I saw Owner hand over my siblings, while the mysterious man handed Owner a pile of green stuff. I ran back to mommy, scared, not knowing what was going on. Mom just had a sad look in her eyes.
I ran to the bush and crawled under it, so I could reach the fence and see through it. I watched mystery man roughly stuff my siblings into a box and slam the car door shut. I watched the man speed off in his cheap car, and started to think about what would happen to my siblings.
Since I had never been outside Owners backyard, I didn't know what happened in the outside world. I tried to imagine what it was like being taken on walks, like the dogs I had watched as I sat by the fence were taken daily, or if they'd be taken care of a loving family like I had seen on the advertisements on the house across the street. As I started to drift off, I heard Owner calling for us. I had to fight the urge to go running to him, because I thought that he may be feeding us his leftovers, but I was extremely suspicious, especially after he gave my siblings to that man. I heard how my siblings came bounding up to him, but as always, he just kicked them away.
I caught a glimpse of what he was doing through the bush- he roughly grabbed my brother and carried him to the house. I didn't have to watch again to know what would happened. Then and there I decided that I would not let anyone take me away. I had to get away, away from those evil looking people.
