YOU HAVE TO TAKE the fall for Kage."

"I know that already."

"You weren't planning to find some way to get you both out of this?"

"No. I love Kage. I'll die for him."

I heard my dad sigh over the phone. I think he was actually hoping that I had come up with some master plan to get out of this. There was no need. I wanted to die if it would mean Kage would keep living. I wanted that more than anything.

"Ivory..."

"I know I won't be able to complete my job, my reason for coming to Black Wing: to look after Kage. And I'm sorry for not being able to help you keep that promise you made to Kage's dad."

I took a deep breath. My dad was silent. I think it finally hit him that he may never hear from or see me again.

"Dad, I just wanted to tell you that I love you. And this may be the last time you hear from me."

"Ivory, don't say that."

"But it's true! I'm sorry for all the dumb things I did as a kid and even now. I have to go now. Remember, I love you, Daddy."

I heard my dad cry for the first time as he said, "I love you, too, Ivory. My son."
