7:30 in the morning and my alarm is going off? Um no.
"Kayla wake the hell up" I hear my sister yell down the hall. That woke me up. I hurry and roll out of bed like a potato, and run to the shower.
I'm sure that I stay in there too long because by the time I'm out, it's 8:25 and the bus comes at 8:40."Crap" I say under my breath as I have to hurry up and find an outfit since I didn't pick it the night before. I grab a light blue pair of shorts and a black v-neck, quickly throwing on some white adidas and I ran downstairs.
"Goodmorning to you too Alexa" I sarcastically say to my older sister as I sit next to her at the table. She's on her phone with earbuds in while shoving a piece of bacon in her mouth and doesn't hear anything I just said.
"Huh?" she yells.
"Nevermind" I grabbed my backpack off the chair and snatched a piece of bacon off her plate and ran to the bus stop out in front of my house.
"You greedy dork! You owe me for that!" She spits but I barely hear her because I'm already out the door. Its 8:39 and the bus should be here any minute. I don't know how to feel about the last day of school, should I be happy I'm finished or should I be upset I won't see my friends? This summer should be fun at least.
The bus pulls up in front of me nearly splashing water on me from last nights rain, and I run up the steps tripping over my own feet when I see my best friend, May, has saved a seat for me as always. Her face lights up and immediately I know why.
"Last day of school man!" She shouts so loud that the bus driver looks in the mirror.
"I know" I whisper yell back.
"So are you going to fight somebody, kiss a boy, or prank a teacher today?"
"Um no" I give her a disapproving look. She is always one to mess with somebody.
"Oh well that's okay" her face falls a little.
We stay silent for the rest of the ride mainly because we were saving our energy for school.
May and I have been friends since 2nd grade and ever since, we were inseparable. May always used the term that we were always like peanut butter and jelly but I always remind her that I am allergic to nuts. May isn't that much different from me besides the fact that she is white and I am mixed, we have everything in common. She hates ranch, I hate ranch. She loves orange juice, I love orange juice. One thing though, we never saw eye to eye on boys. They had to be tall, dark hair, and a great personality for me to like them but for her, the complete opposite.
We run off the bus and immediately go to 1st hour which is only 30 minutes long because of the half day.
"Okay students everyone grab your geography books and turn to page E-19 and let's go over paragraph 5. Someone pleas-"
"Why are we doing work on the last day"? John, a kid in my social studies class, always protests when we have work to do but I don't know why because work in class doesn't bother me.
"Well Johnathan you said 'the last day' which means it is still a day, and we are where? School. So indeed it is a school day so what do we do on every school day? Work!" Mr. Cooper explains dramatically. He dresses as a professor although he is just a simple social studies teacher. With his cream Italian suits and black loafers. I can't help but feel bad for the guy because all he wants is a little respect from these horrible students and he sure as hell isn't getting any.
"No wonder he isn't married." John mutters. A few other obnoxious people laugh at his cruel words.
"Let's continue on shall we" Mr. Cooper continues.
. . .
The rest of my classes have passed and I'm ready to get on the bus and go home to start my summer off right.
"Hey Kayla, wait up." May calls after me.
"Guess who's number I got?" She taunts.
"Let me guess some boy you've been chasing after for a week?" I tease. She hits my arm playfully.
"No you dummy. I got Isaiah's number. He totally told me to text him." She sounds like a head over heels 2nd grader.
"That is a boy you've been chasing after for a week but okay cool I guess." I wasn't very fond of Isaiah because he was known for messing with every girl in school.
"Don't sound like that." she says nudging me. We walk to the bus together, hugging old friends exchanging goodbyes to people for good and we even shed some tears.
"What's your summer plans?" May asks when we find our seat on the bus.
"I plan on staying at home, eating, watching Netflix and wishing I had a summer body." I joke even though I know it's true.
"How about no. We just have to throw a huge party to kick the summer off with!" She claps her hands as if she really thinks I am going to go along with this. Party's aren't my thing. I don't mind going to a birthday party or sleepover once in a while but a full on, drinking, loud music, boys everywhere type party isn't my thing.
"Hell to the no."
"Hell to the yes." She mocks.
I tell her no one more time before I realize my stop is here and I have to go.
"Text me you dork were throwing a party!" She yells after me.
"Bye may!" I wave and get off the bus. When I get in I am greeted by my mother sitting on the couch.
"Hey mom."
"Hey guess what!?" She yells seeming overly excited
"My job offered to send me on a business trip for the summer and I took it!" She hugs me.
"Awesome!" I halfheartedly say, although I will miss her this is good for her.
"Another thing though Kayla." She looks down her face nearly on the floor.
"Yeah?" I question.
"You're staying over your fathers for the summer" she says biting her lip the way she does when she has bad news.
My mouth falls open onto the ground and it takes me a moment to pick it back up.
