As we walk out the door he reaches for my hand and my stomach flutters at the romantic gesture.
"We should go see a movie!" I say as I get in the car. His eyebrows twitch.
"Movies disturb me." He says pulling out of the driveway.
"Why?" I ask my confidence fading a bit.
"I don't like being in dark places with strangers."
"Your heart is a dark place if you don't like movies."
We both share a light laugh and it feels great.
"Why do you like the movies so much?" He asks obviously curious.
"Ever since I was little I've wanted to be a performer. Not an actress of course but I just wanted to be in plays on stage and feel alive as I act the part as best as I can. I still want to do that and its a set goal for me to go into Theater when I go to college." I ramble on. Out of the side of my eye I catch him staring at me intently. Realization hits me in the face and I quickly apologize to how lame I am.
"Oh um sorry that was cheesy." I stutter. I need to stop stuttering what the hell.
"No its not," he places his hand on my thigh. "I think that's great that you set goals for yourself."
"Thanks for that. My mom always told me that theater was for the people who belonged in theater. She always wanted me to be something better, but I don't think there is something better. For me at least." I let out all the feelings that I hadn't realized I was holding in.
"I don't even know your mom and I already don't like her, or your dad." He laughs and I laugh with him. He was starting to become a really good friend of mine.
We pull into the parking lot of a movie theater and I laugh at the look Dave gives the place.
"Ok let's go into this shit hole." He says opening the door for me and I smack his arm playfully at his vulgar language.
He grabs my hand and we walk into the theater.
The lady behind the counter gives us a weird look and asks us what movie we want to see.
We end up picking some sappy love movie about a man who falls in love with his computer. I fell asleep half way into it and got hushed a few times because of my snoring. The movie kind of sucked and I regret making Dave come here."C'mon sweets we should go back." Dave says getting in the car. He drives off and his phone starts to ring.
"Hello?" I try to hear the muffled voice on the other end but I can't.
"Yeah no I'm busy right now."
"You owe me but fine." He says and the line clicks.
"Who was that?" I ask.
"My brother. We have to make a small detour." He says looking highly annoyed.
"Okay." We get onto the freeway and he turns the volume up on the radio. I'm not sure if I should say anything to him while he is in this state.
An hour later we pull into the parking lot of an hotel complex that looks ratted down. The sign reads, "Cleveland Complex's". By the time we get out the car, a tall thin man with a beard and slight resemblance to Dave, is coming out of the double doors.
"David! Hello old pal! Long time no see huh?" He hugs Dave.
"Its been a month. Anyways what did you need me for?" Dave says impatiently and I step forward to introduce myself.
"Oh well hello there pretty lady. What's your name?" He grabs my hand and kisses it just as Dave had the first day we met.
"Kayla. Yours?" I step beside Dave.
"James Franco. What a pleasure to meet you." His smile is warm and welcoming but there's something unsettling behind it.
"Okay okay you've met! Now what the hell do you want?" Dave yells. I find his anger sort of amusing since I have never seen him this way.
"Too good to see your own brother? You know fath-" James begins.
"Don't speak of father. Anyways I'm here for? Because I have a nonexistent life I could be getting back to." Dave says and my feelings are hurt slightly.
"Okay come on up I'll explain everything." We follow James to his room and I take a seat at the desk chair and listen to their conversation since neither of them seem to mind. I sit and pick at my already chipped nail polish.
"So when I came down the first guy I visited was Mike. He has this new girlfriend her name is like Ruby or some shit but Mike got invited to this huge college party in Toledo and said you should come." James says. A shiver runs down my spine at the mention of Toledo.
I've never been to a party especially not to a college one but I decide that I don't want to go. Am I even going?"I don't know man." Dave says after a long pause.
"You have to! Its summer and you're moping around the house with our drunk ass mother!" James says. Dave never mentioned his mother so I assumed it was his house. Drunk? This is all brand new to me.
"Shut the hell up would you?!" Dave yells obviously for my sake. I don't want to feel as if he's keeping secrets from me.
"Okay. You're coming right?"
"Fine but shit, you owe me." Dave says. He stands to walk over to me and James stops him to give him an awkward hug. James walks over to me and whispers something in my ear. "He has a bit of a temper. Don't worry." He says smiling. I wave goodbye to James, who seems somewhat nice, and me and Dave walk into the hot stuffy air outside.
We get in the car.
"What was that all about?" I ask.
"You heard." He says rudely.
"I know but I'm talking about your mother. You never mentioned her. That's her house? Can I meet her?" I bombard him with questions.
"You're so damn nosy aren't you? I'm not playing 20 questions!" He snaps. I decide to shut my mouth and shrink down into the seat a little. I didn't know anything really about Dave besides the fact that he reads my favorite book and he seems to get angry quick. We pull up at his or his mother's house and he gets out of the car without saying anything. This won't end well.
