Chapter Three – The Stain in the Curtain
The moment we both hit the water we were torn apart. The rushing waters didn't even give us a chance as I had slipped from his arms, and the weight of my dress was dragging me down. I barely gasped for air as I fought to the surface. There was no possibility for me to get out of my dress myself since the corset was tied to the back. My lungs were burning and I knew if I didnt breathe soon I was going to drown. Out of nowhere my leg snapped and it was so sudden it took me by surprise; I screamed letting out the last of the air that was in my lungs.
I was going to die.
I can't die, I thought to myself, not yet; so many things I want to do, so many things to live for. The freezing water felt like needles poking me throughout my body, and suddenly I was feeling numb.
Fight.
I closed my eyes. I was falling into a dark abyss and at some point I stopped swimming; death was so welcoming – so peaceful.
Fight it Aurora.
Fight? How? I can't do anything, and Wolf Man isn't here to help me.
You're not alone, not anymore. I'm here now.
In the abyss, a bright light shined above and slowly it kept coming closer. The sphere of light radiated with warmth, the feeling was new yet it felt like it had been with me all my life. I smiled as it came closer and I lifted my hand to touch it.
"So warm." I said.
It's time to wake up Aurora.
I frowned. I wanted to stay with the light.
You're not dead. Our mate is calling, its time to go back.
My mate. Wolf Man – he found me?
"Breathe! Dont you dare leave me!" My mate was growling at me; His voice sounded so far away. I felt pressure on my chest, and it was building up fast. The water shot out mouth and I was gasping for air; my lungs were burning but it was the excruciating pain of my leg that caused me to cry out.
My mate hand clasped my mouth shut, my screams muffled. It seemed like my mate couldn't understand why I was crying, that was until another bone snapped. I was so scared to move; I remember my mother telling me the first shift was always unbearably painful.
Wolf Man's eyes widen in surprise, finally realizing what was going on, "Damnation! Not now." My mate looked at me with conflict as if he were battling an argument inside his head. "No. No. No. I wont do it," he said but I knew he wasn't speaking to me. He shook his head desperately, and pulled me closer to him. He sighed in defeat, "I apologize love, but there's no other alternative."
I tried to focus on his words trying to comprehend what he was talking about. It was difficult though, with the pain spreading throughout my body; and because of it I was completely unaware and unprepared for what came next. He tilted my head to the side and removed the wet strands of hair. Wolf Man leaned in hesitating at first before planting a kiss on my neck; without any more hesitation he elongated his teeth and marked me.
Wolf Man marking me was something even more extraordinary than our eyes meeting at first sight. There was a short pain before becoming a blissful heaven, which blurred the pain I was enduring while shifting. It brought comforting warmth and an intimate connection with my mate. I could feel his worry and anxiety for my well-being, and at the side the possessive yet pleased thought of marking me.
He withdrew from my neck, the mark already healing as was the rest of my body. I didnt feel the pain when my bones snapped together again and my once shivering body was still with warmth. I hugged him fiercely and sighed in relief, "Thank you."
