L stared at his computer screen, his dark eyes scanning it intensely. He was, for the first time in his twenty three years of living, stuck. He brought his thumb to his lips as continued to read the infomation on the screen and pictures given by his faithful loyal servant Watari.
"Mello or Near..?" He murmered, unwrapping a strawberry flavoured lollipop, bringing the glucosed sweet up to his lips, flicking it with his tongue slightly. Two pictures where on the bightly lit laptop screen, both of two boys. One was tall, with golden coloured hair in shape of a bob and piercing blue eyes. His smile was curved into a smirk, and he wore a long black t-shirt with a red beaded rosary hanging from his pale white neck, according to the text underneath, his name was called Mello.
The boy underneath was his exact opposite. He was considerably younger and smaller, with curly white hair and huge black orbs for eyes. He wore a white pajama top and was clutching a toy robot to his chest. Underneath him was also the name Near.
"So Watari, these two boys have been deemed my successors, yes?" L spoke into his microphone, knowing Watari was on the other side.
"Yes L, thses two boys have scored the best in all tests we provide at Wammys, and have the best analytical skills to even rival you" Watari replied, his voice sounding from the laptop. L smirked at this, and licked the lollipop even more, savouring the sweet sugar.
"Their personalities?" He asked, withdrawing the sweet from his mouth
"Mello's analytical skills are incredible, and his obvious passion for edcucation shows through this, although he can be incredibly impulsive and has very obvious anger issues which I belive are due to his childhood. Near on the other hand, is stoic and emotionless. He has a passion for puzzles and toys, and does better than Mello in most tests, due to Mello's obvious fury. Near also is a mathemaical genius, and has deductive abilities to seriously rival you, L" Watari spoke.
L nodded, and sucked on the lollipop once more. Near sounded like his best bet, and even sounded exactly like himself..but there was something about Mello that just seemed alluring, fascinating even. It was difficult. L popped the sweet out of mouth and set it down on the side and leaned into the microphone again
"Set a final exam, whoever wins this test, I will make my decision" L spoke again. He heard the sound of Watari's computer click, signifying he had logged out of his computer. L closed his laptop and rubbed his eyes, yawning to himself. Sometimes, although he'd never admit it, he felt exhausted. Not only did he have the Kira case to solve, but now he had the issue with picking a successor just in case he died. He sighed quietly, and brought his knees up to his chest, curled up in his infamous posistion.
Suddenly, he heard the door open and slam shut
"Ryuzaki?" A small voice asked. L instantly knew it was Light, and sat up almost immidatley, knowing Light probably was telling him to go to bed as it was incredibly late, even by the insomniac's detective standards. Light responded with exactly that, and L told him he'd go to bed as soon as he could. He rubbed his eyes once more as Light left the room and then fell onto the floor, his mind crashing into sleep. The worlds most talented detetive slept, curled up on a hard wooden floor, by his laptop, exhausted and tired.
