Chiyuri and Michiru both had to live with their other relatives in Japan. As their aunt didn't want to take in two children at once, Michiru was send away to live with one of their other relatives. Michiru went to live in Kyoto, by their other aunt and uncle, of the Fukami family. Michiru's aunt was the sister of her mother, and was also originally from the Katsura family, but she abandoned her surname, and chose to take on the Fukami name when she got married. As a result, most of the Katsura family members resented her and her husband, except for Yuu and Misuzu. They still held contact and stayed on friendly terms with them, helping them whenever they were in need. The Fukami's had one daughter, around the age of 4, named Kanon. Kanon immediately had taken a liking to Michiru, but even though Michiru liked the idea of having another 'sister' to care about, she still missed Chiyuri a bit. She and Chiyuri had lost contact not long after they were taken to different houses.
Chiyuri, who went to live with her aunt, hated her life there. Her aunt wasn't very fond of Chiyuri either, because in her opinion, Chiyuri's parents we're the reason why her husband was in jail. Her husband, who was addicted to gambling, had a lots of debts. After getting fired from his job, he didn't have any way to pay of his debts either, while the interest on the money he borrowed kept piling up. He didn't stop gambling after that either, until the debt collectors started to come after him. Realising there was only one way to get more money, he went to Chiyuri's parents, which owned a jewellry store, and begged them to borrow some of their money. Yuu and Misuzu however, refused. They were usually really friendly and immediately came to help when other family members needed them, especially since Misuzu was the oldest child of the Katsura family, and had inherited most of her parents money, but they knew that he wouldn't stop gambling and probably wanted the money to use it on gambling again, instead of to pay off his debts. That would've gotten him into even more trouble. Being chased by debt collectors, he tried to rob a bank, but was arrested when he tried to escape by a police officer who unfortunately was on patrol in the area at that time. He had been in jail ever since. That's when he thought up his plan, and convinced two of his close friends to help him steal the family heirloom. With the money the necklace would bring up he could not only pay off all his debts, but also pay himself out of jail, even after he paid his friends. His friends were also into gambling, so there was of course no reason for them to decline his offer, and they agreed to help him. Not much later after he was sent to jail, because of all the debts, his wife had to sell their house, and even some pieces of their furniture. They used to live in a quite enormous house, but now she was left with a small, old, worn-down house. Chiyuri's aunt had been angry at Yuu and Misuzu ever since, because in her point of view, everything would've been different if only they had lend her husband the money he had needed. That's why she couldn't stand their children, Chiyuri and Michiru, either.
Chiyuri's aunt often yelled at Chiyuri, and let her do all the housekeeping. She had no job, since she used to be a housewive. Even though it made Chiyuri feel miserable to be yelled at all the time, she couldn't completely hate her aunt for it. After all, it wasn't completely her aunt's own fault. She must've been feeling horrible too, as she was drunk most of the time, trying to drink her problems away. When she wasn't at home, she went to a bar or club, and mostly stayed the night in a nearby hotel. Otherwise she'd rarely go out. The whole house smelled like alcohol, with often a lot of empty bottles laying around in the living room. The only things Chiyuri did in the house were cooking and washing clothes. She sometimes also cleaned up a bit, but there was too much trash and the house was way too filthy for her to clean all alone. She still had to go to school too.
Her aunt and uncle had a son which was the same age as Chiyuri, Mitsuhiko Katsura (Mitch Woodward). Mitsuhiko was a sports fanatic, but was also really lazy so mostly stayed inside the house after school. He prefered to watch sports over playing it himself, although he played soccer quite often. If not, he could be found at his room, playing video games or watching TV instead. His room was a mess too, and he probably never lifted a single finger to try and clean one time. Because of the state the whole house was in, both Chiyuri and Mitsuhiko never invited any friends into their home. Not that Chiyuri had any when she first moved in. She couldn't really get along with her nephew either, and felt really lonely. But after a while she started to change. After all, she didn't have a choice. She wanted to start over with her life and change, so that one day, she could return to America. She wanted to meet Domon again, hoping he would like her if she wasn't the shy girl she used to be anymore. To her, living with her aunt and nephew became just another obstacle she had to overcome to become stronger. She didn't want to be afraid of everything anymore, she wanted to become much stronger, more like her sister.(Dub only); Because of that she also started to use another name, the name of her sister, Amy. She didn't wanted to be Amethyst anymore because it reminded her of the 'weak' person she used to be, and thus became Amy instead.
