"Did you guys really have to take me all the way to my room?" I asked, rolling my eyes at my parents. It was hard enough knowing that everyone would be treating me differently. I had at least hoped my first day here could be low key, but of course not. Nothing in this family is ever low key.
"Of course not, darling, we have to make sure you're safe" my mother said. I looked to my right at her and gave her a sympathetic smile. And then I looked behind me and realized how many security detail they had brought. Were all of these men for me?
Great.
Now there was no way in hell I was blending in on campus.
I decided to leave the arguing with my father to another day. After all, how often does the First Daughter go to a public university?
I decided not to let anything ruin today, so I focused on finding my room. My room was 505.
503...504... There it is!
I opened my door and sighed. It was everything I had hoped.
It was small, just perfect.
With a mini fridge and a sofa under the huge window on the wall adjacent to the door and two beds, it couldn't get any better than this.
"Wait," I said taking a look around the room again. "Two beds? Does that mean...?"
"Yes sweetie, you'll have a roommate." My father said and I couldn't stop the grin from spreading across my face.
Over the past week we had several arguments about how we would make this the most realistic, casual, and most importantly, normal college experience. A roommate was on his "no" list.
"Olivia!" My dad called, and within seconds Olivia walked into the room. She was wearing a pencil skirt that ended just right above her knees and her black hair was tucked into a tight bun on the back of her head. She nodded once, letting my father know she was ready for whatever task he would throw at her. "Do you have Rosie's roommate file?"
"Oh, yes sir," she looked down at the stack of files in her hand, rifled through the them until she found what she was looking for and handing one of the files to my dad, which he then handed to me.
There was a little blue tag at the top of the file that read "Hastings, Paisley".
I set the file on my bed side table, not even bothering to look through it. I already knew what I would find. An entire background check on my roommate. I would already be giving her enough trouble rooming with me, I don't want to invade her privacy either.
I ignored my parents glares at me, knowing how unprepared they thought I was.
I mean, I loved my parents, but they were a little bit too much. I was just excited to be on my own for once.
Well, as on my own as it gets.
Olivia cleared her throat, signaling that my parents had dorm where to be. We were on a minute to minute schedule after all. My mother was in tears as she kissed me goodbye and my dad wouldn't let go of me for a solid 3 minutes as he hugged me.
"You be good now, kiddo," my dad said, I could tell her was fighting back tears as well. He gave me a kiss on the forehead and grabbed my mothers arm.
"And don't forget to call us if you need anything!" My mom added in as she was being dragged out the door. "Olivia did you give her a cell phone?" I laughed as I heard my mom bicker at Olivia all the way down the hall until their voices were gone.
I closed my door and turned around. Finally. Walking to the middle of the room I twirled once, taking it all in again.
No one would understand just how much this meant to me.
I decided to give Paisley the better bed. She'd feel uncomfortable enough with people watching her every move and my security detail stalking her, she should be able to get a good nights rest. I'll survive with the shitty bed.
Just as I was unpacking I heard a few muffled voices outside my door.
"Would you get off my suitcase!" A female yelled. I ran to the door and open it immediately to find Ben and Ricky going through a girls suitcase. She was tall, but not taller than me. Her hair was just cut to her shoulder, blonde. It was a perfect kind of curly. While she was arguing with my boys I noticed that she had a few piercings on her ears. And another on her eyebrow. Wait.. Are those two? I loved it. It was something my parents would never let me get. Only one on each ear. I mentally rolled my eyes at them.
"You must be Paisley," I extended my arm for her to shake, "I'm Rosemarie". After a few seconds, when she didn't shake my hand back, I put it down next to me again. I didn't blame her. She was probably furious with having her privacy invaded. "It's okay guys," I said and the boys looked at me with weary eyes, but they obliged and let her belongings go. Paisley snatched her bras from Ricky and stuffed then back into her now very messy suitcase. I helped her haul her things into the room and onto her bed.
"I know who you are, I mean, who doesn't" Paisley said, her arms crossed in front of her. "You're a lot shorter in person," I knew this wouldn't be so easy, but it's what I wanted. I tucked my hair behind my ears and laughed once at her remark. I'm guessing she took pity on me and uncrossed her arms and dropped the sassy attitude. I was grateful. "Look, I'm looking forward to this year. I don't mind you being here at all, even with your" she glanced over her shoulder and towards the door, "guards. As long as they keep to themselves we're cool. You don't seem like a total bitch anyways." I liked her already. "The only thing I want is a normal college experience. If you get in the way of that, I'm out."
"Don't worry, that's the only thing I want as well." I said sitting down my my bed again. Relief washed over me. I thought I'd have to find a new roommate. Do you know how long that would be? They're have to look through the profiles of every single female on this campus. And the checklist was hard to fulfill.
"Well then, Rosie, can I call you that?" I nodded at her. Everyone called me that, " we're going to get along just fine."
