Chapter 1"Mom please, stay with me! You're the alphas wife, a Luna, a leader, my strong momma, why don't you fight harder? Please don't leave me momma" I was begging now. "I don't know what to do. I don't want you to die. "
My mother shook her head "Gemini, my sweet little gem, I wish I could stay but the truth is I'm tired baby, I'm so very tired, I don't think I have any more fight left in me. I've accepted it baby I have no choice but to leave my little girl." Her welled up but there was true between us now, no lies and no pretending.
"I don't think I can live without you momma" I pleaded. And I couldn't she was the most important person in my life, the one consistent person who never ever failed or hurt me. The only person who truly knew all my hopes, all my dreams, all my secrets and all my fears. She was everything a mother should be and more. She was the woman I had always aspired to be like even when I was a little girl. I couldn't live without my mother.
She lifted her hands, tears falling down her face, she brushed the strands of hair out my face and looked deep into my eyes. "You're going to have too baby." She whispered said softly.
Her soft voice would often soothe me, keep me grounded, and show me the way. But now it petrified me. What would I do, never being able to hear it again? The lullabies she used to sing and the stories she used to read. Where would I be without my mother? Who would I become?
Four years ago, we had moved to Avalon, a relatively small village located in the Northern forests. My mother had fallen in love with a man Alaric Alcaeus, part man anyway. After twelve years of heartbreak Celeste Amalia Sage had finally loved again. Alaric and my mother found each other while grieving for people they had lost. God worked in strange ways he took and he gave. He caused happiness but could also caused pain. I watched their love grow more and more every single day, although I could not remember my father I heard many stories of the man he was and how much my mother had loved him, I know that he will always be a part of me. However Alaric treated me as his own, protected me and loved me just as ferociously as my mother. He was the strongest man I had ever met, my father. And now God was taking away the most important thing to him all over again, his second chance.
Now I sat watching him holding my mother, knowing he would lose her too. His hands were shaking, tears threatening release. But he would be strong or try to be.
It was in his blood.
The way he was made.
The blood of an Alpha.
"Listen to me gem, you have to be careful there are dangerous people out there who will try to use you, hurt you because of your gifts, and they are gifts, they are not a curse! I swear it and I have never and will never lie to you, you must believe in your gifts they will guide you baby." There was worry, always worry that was my mother even in these times she thought about me.
"Listen to me gem, this is so very important, there will come a time when you will be afraid and lost. But never forget you a never alone. I want you to also never forget who you are. For all the gifts in the world kindness is the greatest, a gift everyone is born with but my baby you have however mastered it, never forget it is a weapon of peace, a weapon of love. The greatest weapon of all so wherever you are, wherever you go use it. Use it always. Because it is the most precious thing you can ever give another person. Never change who you are my special little baby girl."
I blinked back tears this was my mother accepting surrender. She was accepting defeat.
Defeat. It was a foreign concept, one that I would have never associated with my mother, she had taught me to never give up and yet here she lay preparing herself and preparing us for what was to come.
A life without her.
"Rick? Ricky"
"I'm here, sweetheart" he squeezed her tighter.
"Promise me, promise me you need to protect our daughter whatever it takes" She pleaded.
"Always"
"Whatever it takes, promise me" she said again.
He gulped. Like she was asking something else something that was already causing him pain.
But he nodded.
"I swear it baby, whatever it takes."
"I need to talk to your father alone, gem I love you so much, never forget, come and give me a kiss baby."
I moved slowly and placed a kiss on her forehead while she wrapped her arms around me, the last time I would be held by my mother.
"I love you gem"
I then quietly left the room, only turning to look at her when I got to the door. She smiled at me encouragingly and nodded, that was my mother telling me I would see here again before it was over.
The Luna needed to say goodbye to her Alpha. I shut the door and let out a breath I wasn't even aware of holding.
"I love you too mama." I whispered into the silence knowing after tonight nothing would ever be the same again.
