"Maddie! you're going to be late for the first day of your new school, you've got to make a good impression" yelled my mum as she shook me side to side. I groaned and rolled over. I had always hated early mornings but no doubt about it, today was definitely going to be a lot worse. I didn't want to be late on my first day but at the same time I could really do without it. Plus I wasn't the most outgoing of people and had always been a shy girl.
I twenty minuted later than planned forced myself out of bed and jumped into the shower and got ready into my new uniform. I decided to have my hair half up, half down and curled it at the bottom. I didn't apply too much makeup as I didn't want to give off the wrong impression.
Today was the first day at my new school, Penola Catholic School to be exact. I had heard it was a pretty good school from my cousins who used to go here when they were younger so I decided it'd do for me as they seemed well educated. With my mums job I had, had to move a few times but she assured me we wouldn't have to move again for a while and would get settled here. I was born in England and lived there till the age of 7 but Sydney had predominantly been my home for all these years and we had never had to move as far out as we had now to Melbourne. Luckily I hadn't had to change many schools.
I was 16 now, one of the oldest and on my last year of school. It'd always just been me and my mum, since i was an only child and my dad worked abroad and visited on holidays or as often as he could. I packed my books and lunch in my bag and hopped into the passenger side of my mums car where she was waiting. Mum had decided to take me today as I still wasn't that familiar with Glenroy and knowing me I'd probably get lost, although it wasn't very far from my house. Within 15 minutes we were there.
"It looks nice Maddie" my mum said.
"Yeah, it does" I replied.
I put on a brave face, looked at her and smiled. I didn't know whether to cry or scream with excitement.. I was very keen to make new friends in the area as I didn't have any since I had got here but at the same time it was so daunting and I was scared if people weren't going to like me. Mum and I stepped out of the car and walked towards the front office where the school had told us to go on my first day so they could sort everything out. On the way I noticed some really hot guys leaning against the railings. They seemed to be looking over, most likely to be thinking who the hell I am "I hope they're all as hot as them" I muttered under my breath. Although it was quite embarrassing walking alongside my mum.
We entered the office and walked up to the front desk where a chubby lady with glasses sat.
"How can I help?" She asked in a polite tone.
"Hello, it's my daughter Maddie Birch's first day here and I got told by the lady on the phone to come here to get her sorted" my mum replied.
"Oh yes, Maddie, I was told you would be coming today, nice to meet you.. If you follow Mrs. Adams she'll lead the way and your mum can leave knowing you're in safe hands" she said with a smile pointing to a tall slim woman standing next to her.
I could feel butterflies in my stomach and started to become anxious. My mum gave me a big hug and kissed me on the cheek.
"Have a lovely day, I'll be back to pick you up in the same spot I dropped you off at earlier when school finishes sweetheart" she turned around, waved and continued to walk down the path back to the car.
The woman who I had been told was Mrs.Adams ushered me towards her and reassured me that everything would be okay. I was slightly more relaxed but nervous to see my classmates and everybody else. "Hi, Maddie, I'm Mrs.Adams.. Your head of year and you can come to me if there's any problems" she told me as we walked down a long corridor before turning left into a classroom.
Oh my god, I thought. I was so scared, everyone had stopped what they were doing and were now looking completely in my direction staring straight at me! I wanted to die right there and then. The class teacher stopped what she was doing and told Mrs.Adams and I to come inside. I stood there with my arms folded as if so to protect myself and tried my hardest to seem as confident as I could. To me the whole class was a blur and I couldn't even pick out peoples facial features. I was sure they could tell how nervous I was.
Mrs.Adams whispered to the teacher and left whilst telling me to come to her if there were any problems. These were the people I presummed would be my classmates. The teacher stood me next to her and winked at me and said "hi".
She seemed very nice. Whether she was like that all the time I did not know yet but I guess I would find out soon. Things started to come into focus now. "Can I have everybody's attention please..we have a new student who is starting today her name is Maddie Birch and she has come from Sydney so please make her feel welcome and answer any questions she has"
"Hey" I said quietly trying to force it out. God I felt like such a loser. The majority of the class thankfully smiled. What a relief. They didn't seem bad at all accept for a few dodgy looking ones at the back. But what do you expect. She handed me a piece of paper with a timetable on already printed out for me and told me to sit next to a girl named Grace.
"Now Grace, I want you to buddy up with Maddie for today and show her around and make sure she goes to the same lessons as you just for today so she can get to know how things run round here, don't forget to make her feel welcome"
"Sure Miss" Grace replied. We both turned and smiled at each other.
