“How was school today, Claire?” Claire’s father asked curiously, his eyebrows wiggling up his face and resting near his hairline.
“It was fine,” She brushed a piece of hair out of face, throwing her feet up on the dining room table out of habit.
“That’s not what your teacher told me,” Her father replied sternly, feeling his anger rise as his daughter continued to play with her hair mindlessly. “Listen up, Claire! This is not a game, this is your education!”
“I already know how to shoot, why do I need to know how to turn into someone else?” She asked, her severely condescending tone further adding to her father’s rage.
“Still,” He took a deep breath, trying to cool himself before trying to reason with this complicated child. “I would like you to educate yourself; you are the heiress of the Jinx throne.” His eyes traveled down to the table, where Claire’s feet were resting. “Please remove your feet from the table.”
“Tch,” Claire huffed, dragging her feet off the table, an annoying squeaking noise following her feet. “I don’t know why I have to train to be a ninja if I’m just going to be forced to breed like an animal until I die.” Her hands slapped against the table, her arms pushing her off of the mat and standing before her seething father.
“Don’t you dare talk to me like that,” He snapped, reaching for Claire’s arm but instead grasping at the air where her arm was. “You know we are trying our best to find a cure for this clan’s curse!” She had leapt backwards, holding her sides and simply ‘tsking’ her father’s words.
“You better find a freakin’ cure, there’s no way I’m putting my life on the line just because you say I have to.” Claire shrugged, running one hand through her snow white hair and letting out a frustrated sigh. “I’m going out, don’t send for me.” She turned without caring to wait for her father’s reply, twisting and turning through the halls and out the door.
What an butthole, she growled inwardly, kicking her sandals into the cement pathway angrily. Why does he think he has any say in my life, she glanced down at her hands, seeing the distinct black powder covering her hand and sighing. I should have washed before I left.
“Claire,” A voice sounded from behind her, the tone that reached her resembling her fathers.
“I told you not to send for me,” Claire spat, twisting around on her heels and sticking her pointer finger out towards the man. “Are you deaf?” She looked up, the man practically towering above her, much different than her father’s height.
“I’m sorry, I saw you leave in such a rush, I thought you’d like to talk to someone.” His golden eyes reflected Claires, a sad smile forming on his face.
“I don’t need to talk, and I don’t need someone trying to butter me up, Dai” Claire hissed, wiggling her outstretched finger at him. “I’d appreciate the thought if I knew for sure that you weren’t following my fathers’ orders.”
“I assure you, I have no idea-”
“Bah! Why do I even try to talk to guys? They’re all after the same thing!” Claire withdrew her hand, placing it firmly on her hip and leaning to the side. “Now you can go scurry back to my father and tell him I wouldn’t cooperate, because I sure as hell am not going back.”
With a sigh, he turned; walking back towards the main house like Claire knew he would. I don’t want a mate; I don’t want a boyfriend… I just want to live. She sighed, gaze drifting to the setting sun ahead, the splash of pink against the sun’s rays putting her worries at ease.
“I’ll run away!” Claire whispered under her breath, snapping her fingers in front of her and smiling. “I-I’ll run to another village.” She stammered, her hands sliding against her thighs aimlessly, her feet carrying her out of her families part of the village and through the crowded market.
Her hand rose towards her mouth, the rugged edges of her nails scraping against her lips as she prepared to nibble on them again. Blech!, she spat out the small chunk of her nail, a small drop of blood dripping from her ravaged flesh.
“You shouldn’t do that,” Claire turned, catching sight of a blonde girl standing with her hands on her hips. “It damages your nails and your teeth.” She observed Claire carefully, looking up and down with a disgusted look.
“Can I help you?” Claire huffed, crossing her arms defiantly.
“No, but I can help you,” She smiled, holding out her hand, “My name’s Ino, and you desperately need my help.”
“How so,” Claire asked, seeing Ino move a hand in front of her mouth as she chuckled, the slight bouncing of her ponytail entrancing Claire.
“Your hair, your nails, your feet,” Ino listed off the parts of Claires body she really couldn’t care less about polishing. “Come on in, I’ve got 10 more minutes until I have to get back to work, we can get your hair done.”
“10 minutes on hair?” Claire sighed, running her hand through her hair and feeling the oil stick to her powder-coated hand. “… I guess that makes sense.” She muttered, holding out her hand and fighting a smile as Ino shamelessly grabbed it, giving her a bright smile before dragging her into the flower shop.
