Stile's P.O.V.
"Wanna make cookies?" I ask as I bump the front door open with my hip. Rae nods and smiles as I drag her into the kitchen, opening the refrigerator and grabbing the milk bottle. She snatches it off of me and laughs as I swallow the milk I managed to steal and look into the dining room to see Dad surrounded by paperwork. "Whatcha doing?"
"Work," Dad grumbles, not looking up from his work.
Rae pops her head around the door and smiles. "Hey Sheriff."
"Hi Rae," he answers, looking up and smiling. "Staying the night?"
"Uh, yeah, if - if that's-"
"It's absolutely fine," he beams, and she grins. He puts his head back down to his paper and I scoff.
"Nice to see who's more loved in this house," I mutter, and Rae smiles, wrapping her arms around my waist.
"Me, clearly," she teases, and I mimic her voice before kissing her gently.
I poke my head around the doorway again. "Anything I can help with?"
Dad sighs. "You know, if you poured me an ounce of whiskey, that would be awfully nice."
I grab the tumbler and bottle and sit down at the table, Rae sitting opposite Dad. I pour him a shot and go to hand it to him. "Any leads?"
"You know I can't discuss that with you," he replies. "Not too much." I smirk down at the bottle, look at Rae, who shakes her head, and pour him a quadruple. I hand it to him and he downs it all in one, and Rae's mouth drops open. I know she wasn't expecting that. He's soon absolutely smashed. "You know, Derek Hale would be a whole hale of a lot - Hale of a lot?"
"Hell of a lot?" Rae offers.
"Hell," Dad nods slowly. "Yes. He would be a hell of a lot easier to catch if we could get an actual picture of him."
"How do you not have a picture of him?" I ask. Dad pulls out a picture from the case files scattered over the dining table.
"It's the weirdest thing," he mumbles, showing me and Rae the picture of Derek. It's his mug shot, but his eyes are emitting some kind of light as the flash goes off. "It's like every time we tried to get a mug shot, it's like two - laser beams were pointing at the camera."
"Nice," I chuckle, but Rae kicks my leg under the table.
"Oh, my God," Dad sighs. "Ohh! God, that ounce hit me like a brick." I look down at his empty glass and feel a slight pang of guilt, but bury it deep down. "And I have said way too much, and if either of you repeat any of that -"
"Dad, it's us," I scoff. "We're not gonna say anything. Come on."
"See, the thing is," he carries on, "they're all connected. I mean, the bus driver that got killed, he was an insurance investigator assigned to the Hale house fire."
"'Terminated under suspicion of fraud'," Rae reads from her spot at the top of the table. I glance up at her and she shrugs. "I can read upside down."
"Who else?" I ask my dad.
"The video store clerk who got his throat slashed," Dad says, and Rae and I nod. "He's a convicted felon, history of arson."
"What about the other two guys, the guys who got killed in the woods?"
"Priors all over their records including-"
"Arson," Rae finishes. "So maybe they all had something to do with the fire."
I look down at his empty glass and smirk. "Another shot?"
"No," Rae says sternly.
"No, Rae's right," Dad says, shaking his hand. "No more."
"Dad, come on," I sigh. "You work really hard, all right? You deserve it."
"Oh, my God, I'm gonna have such a hangover," Dad chuckles as he hands over his glass to me. Rae sighs and pushes her hand through her hair.
"You mean you're gonna have such a good night's sleep," I chuckle back, and Rae raises her eyebrow at me. I turn to I'm facing Rae as I pour in more than I should. "I'm gonna have an eternity in the lowest circle of hell," I mutter.
Dad drinks this one slightly more slowly, but he still drinks it all. Once he's finished it, Rae stands up and walks over to him to help him out of the chair and up to bed. She catches the empty glass that falls out of his hand before it hits the floor. Now he's completely drunk. "Ugh, there's just so many questions."
"Like what?" I ask as I stand up with Rae. She puts the glass on the table and crosses her arms over her chest.
"Like if Derek," Dad says, stumbling over his words, "wanted to kill everyone involved in the fire. Then why start with his sister? I mean, she had nothing to do with it. Why make it look like some kind of animal did it? When that cougar ended up in the parking lot - I checked with animal control. You know the instances of wild animal reports were up 70% the past few months? It's like they're just going crazy, running out of the woods." He sighs and sits back, and Rae tucks her hand under his arm to help him up. "I don't know."
"Or something's scaring them out," I suggest. Rae gives me a look and I hold my finger up to her.
"You know, I miss talking to you," Dad says gently as Rae helps him to his feet. "It's like we never have time-"
"Dad, you know, I have to make a phone call - I'm sorry," I say, turning to head out the room. "I'll be right back."
"Stiles!" Rae says sternly, but I don't stop.
"I do, I miss it," Dad says. "And I miss your mom."
This halts me in my tracks, and I turn back round to my dad, a lump in my throat. Rae's hand is on Dad's shoulder as he sways slightly. "What'd you say?" Dad grabs his glass and goes to pour more whiskey in, but I take it away from him as Rae supports him.
"Thanks," he mutters. Rae takes him up to his room, and I help her as she calls for help from the stairs. We rest him down and he falls straight asleep, and then we head to my room.
Rae crawls onto my bed and lays down on her side. "You okay?"
"Uh, yeah, I just - I never-" I sigh and sink down to sit on the floor, my back against my bed and my head near hers. "He doesn't really talk about her anymore. Neither of us do."
She rubs my shoulder gently and presses a kiss to my temple. "Sometimes, you don't need to talk about it."
I nod and ball my hand into a fist, pressing the edge of my fingers against my lips, resting my elbows on my knees. Within a few minutes, Rae's breathing slows down and I know she's fallen asleep. I rest my head back and think about what my dad just said.
Raelynn's P.O.V.
I must have fallen asleep, because when I open my eyes everything is blurry. The sound that woke me up is louder now, and as I look around I realize I'm still in Stiles's room. He's sat on the floor by his bed, which I'm sprawled on, and his hands are in fists and pressed up against his mouth, knees drawn up to his chest.
I lean down and gently touch his cheek, pulling his face towards me. His cheeks are tear stained and his eyes are red. "Oh, Stiles," I whisper, leaning down to kiss his wet lips. "Ssh, it's okay." I wipe his tears away with my thumbs as he looks at me, his eyes giving a puppy dog look.
"Sorry," he sniffs, shaking his head. "I know it's stupid to cry-"
I grab his shirt and pull him towards me, making him have to scramble onto the bed. He's on top of me, his weight completely on me. I press my lips to his, and he winds his hands in my hair. "It is not stupid to cry, Stiles. It's perfectly human, and I'd rather you cry in front of me than keep it all inside."
"Do you have any idea how much I love you?" he asks, and my heart speeds up.
I smirk. "Hmm, maybe. I don't know how you'd prove it though."
He laughs and rolls so I'm on top of him, and then sits up so I'm straddling his lap. I laugh at him and gently stroke the back of his neck as my arms wrap around him. As we're about to kiss again, my cell phone starts to ring.
"Oh, God!" I gasp, rolling off of Stiles and the bed and onto the floor loudly. "Ow, crap."
"Ssh, Rae, my dad," Stiles snorts.
I find my phone and answer it quickly. "Hello."
"Rae!" Scott gasps, and I furrow my eyebrows. "Are you with Stiles?"
"Yeah," I answer. "Why? This better be damn important, Scott."
"You know how Peter's the Alpha?" he asks, and I nod but then remember he can't see down the phone. "Well, he just showed up at my house and took my mom on a date."
"A - a what?" I mutter, grabbing my jacket and motioning for Stiles to do the same. "Okay, we're coming over."
"No, no you need to follow them," he orders.
"Scott, are you insane?" I ask. "Your mom would kill us."
"And if you don't, she might be killed," he stresses. "I can meet you on the road, I'm fast enough. It needs to be quick though, Allison's upstairs."
"You're just gonna leave her there?" I say.
"What other choice do I have?" he growls, and it sounds like he's running up the stairs.
"Okay, okay, chill," I say. Stiles lifts up my feet and puts my boots on for me, and I kiss his forehead as he stands up. "See you in a bit." I hang up and explain to Stiles what's happening, and we get in the Jeep and drive off to follow Melissa and Peter.
Scott knocks on my door as he runs alongside us, and I scream, not expecting it. "Come on, let me in!" I roll my eyes for him making me scream and open the door as Stiles slows the Jeep down. Scott gets in the back and we drive off.
"There!" Scott points after 5 minutes of driving. "That's them."
"Dammit, they're parked," I curse.
Stiles suddenly swerves and crashes into the back of the car. I scream again and grip the dashboard. "Think that did it." I glare at him and Scott scrambles out as Melissa and Peter get out of the car so he can't be seen. Me and Stiles get out of the Jeep, standing opposite Peter and Melissa.
"Were you trying to kill us?" I hiss.
"We survived," he says, waving it away. I roll my eyes and smile awkwardly as Melissa storms up to us.
"Oh, are you kidding me?" she says loudly. "Stiles! R - Rae?"
"Mrs McCall?" Stiles says, acting like he had no idea it was her.
I decide to play along. "Oh, my God, I'm so sorry. This is completely my fault."
"What a coincidence, huh?" Stiles chuckles, scratching the back of his neck and making big arm gestures; he does that when he's nervous.
"Ha ha-" Melissa says, glaring at us.
"I mean - I do not know what happened," Stiles says. "You guys just came out of nowhere."
"Came out of nowhere!" Melissa shouts. "We were parked on the side of the road, Stiles."
"Mrs McCall, completely my fault," I say quickly, holding my hands up. Her eyes soften as she looks at me. "I - I was being an idiot, made Stiles take his eyes off the road and he didn't have time to swerve." Cars are starting to back up along the road behind us, drivers getting out to see what the commotion is.
"How crazy is that," Stiles says, answering Melissa's question. "I mean, we should probably call the cops, you know, do like an accident report or something."
"I don't think that's necessary," Peter says quickly, stepping beside Melissa. I notice he looks me up and down, but averts his eyes when I narrow mine at him. Stiles elbows me to make me join in.
"Are you sure?" I ask, holding my neck. "I think I'm feeling a little whiplash."
"Whiplash?" Melissa asks, not as loud as she spoke to Stiles, but I know she's not impressed. "You hit us!"
"I don't know -" I stammer. "There's something definitely wrong with my neck." Peter walks off to his car, but I can hear him muttering, but his words are incoherent.
"Rae, come on," Melissa sighs. "There's nothing wrong with your neck." I put my hand down and make an innocent looking face. Melissa chuckles and points her finger at Stiles. "You. Take her home."
My cell phone vibrates and I look down at the message I just received. It's from Kate, saying we need to talk. I sigh and throw my head back as Stiles is explaining to Melissa that I'm staying at his house tonight. "Actually, Stiles, could you drop me home? Family emergency."
He gives me a weird look and I smile gently to him before we head back to the Jeep, driving away slower than we were driving before. The car is silent for a long time, and it starts to feel uncomfortable. Finally, Stiles speaks. "Is - is it too fast?"
"What?" I ask, looking at him. Then I realize my hand is clutching the door slightly. "Your driving? Oh, no, it's fine."
"Not my driving," he sighs, ducking his head slightly before looking back up to the road. He has one hand on the wheel and with the free one he's gently playing with his lips. "You sleeping at my place."
I make an understanding nod and chuckle. "No. It's not too fast."
"Then how come every time we plan for you to, you end up running off?" he asks. I know he feels like he's pressuring me, so I unbuckle my seatbelt and slide over to him, resting my head on his shoulder.
"Because they have been reasons that I can't stay," I say. "And this is one. For definite. It's not you, Stiles, trust me. I want to spend the night with you, I really do, it's just everyone else has impeccable timing of having problems."
He turns up my drive, and suddenly I'm like a little kid who doesn't want to go to school. "So, what's the emergency this time?"
"Kate's thinking of telling Allison about her hunter heritage," I sigh, running a hand through my hair. "But Dad's already said to not tell Allison yet, not until he thinks she's ready."
"But you knew when you could walk," Stiles says, confused.
I shrug. "Allison is his baby. I'm her protector."
"You're his daughter." Stiles clenches his jaw and I put my hands on his cheeks.
"Hey, this isn't something to get mad over," I say quickly. "We got the winter formal in a couple days, Lydia is being super kind and buying me a dress, and you're my date. Everything's gonna be perfect." He grins and leans in, kissing me. Someone bangs on the door of the Jeep, making us flinch apart.
"Come on, lovebirds, that'll do," Kate says, her head popping into view. I smirk and she raises an eyebrow at me.
"I'll see you at school tomorrow," I say, giving Stiles one last peck. As I slam the door, I lean through the window and he leans over and kisses me again. I giggle and he chuckles. "I love you."
"I love you, too," he smiles, and I walk off to the house slowly, almost dancing.
Kate is stood on the porch, her arms crossed over her chest. "You love that kid?"
"Yes," I say as I walk past her, smiling. "What was this 'emergency' then?"
Kate clicks her fingers and a big muscular guy comes up to me, a cloth in his hands. I look back at Kate, confused. "Sorry Rae, I can't let you see where we're about to take you." She nods and the man blindfolds me, and I fight against him but he's way too strong.
About 20 minutes later, the blindfold is taken off. I'm sat in a dark room and Kate is pacing. "What the hell?" I shout.
"Okay, I'm about to get Allison down here," Kate says.
"Where's here?" I interrupt.
"Shut up for a minute!" Kate hisses. I close my mouth; it was an order. "Allison needs to know about our lives. She needs to know what she is."
I shake my head and stand up from the chair I was put on. "No. You are not making me a part of this."
"Well, you're here, so you already are," Kate answers.
"I'm only here because you gave me no choice," I snap. "Dad will go ballistic if we tell Allison. He says she's not ready."
"Oh, and daddy's little girl has to do everything he tells her, right?" Kate teases. I look down, avoiding her eyes. "Rae, come on, wouldn't it feel great to break the rules for once?"
"I have broken the rules before, Kate," I say. "I'm not going to tell Allison what we are. It's too dangerous."
"Too late." She grabs my arm and pulls me along a tunnel to where Allison is walking down. She sees me and her eyes widen, and Kate smiles. "Hey, sweetie. Follow me." We head down the tunnel some more, ducking under what looks like tree branches.
"What is this place?" Allison asks.
Kate doesn't answer until we reach a big metal door that slides open. She lets go of my arm and makes me stand beside Allison and grips the door handle. "Let's start with the basics. You know how every family has its secrets?" Allison nods. "Ours is a little different." Kate slides the door, and lights turn onto a metal grate where someone is held up. I have to contain my gasp as I see Derek hung there, his werewolf showing. Kate walks in and stands by Derek as Allison walks timidly in, and I go behind her. I widen my eyes at Derek to show him that I had no idea what was going on, and he averts my eyes. "Isn't he beautiful?"
Oh, God. Now I have to keep Dad from finding out that Kate let Allison know what we are, and I also have to get Derek out of here. Which isn't going to be easy as I have absolutely no idea where I am.
