My name is Misty Hallows. I'm not like other sixteen year old girls. Apart from the fact I have purple eyes and I've been sixteen for like three hundred years, no joke. I've never lived a normal life. I guess normal doesn't happen with my parents, you see I am the Grim Reaper's daughter. I don't know my mother, I probably never will but I do know my father. I really wish I didn't know him but I won't depress you with my childhood. Childhood. I smiled bitterly at the word, you see the man in the moon had the choice to kill me or let me live when my father kicked me out. The sick, twisted, thing chose to keep me alive as long as I protected and helped the children. I foolishly agreed. My breathless soul was saved and I became the spirit of Halloween. I make sure everything is in order for Halloween and that people get the right dose of fear. Not too much or too little. It's a good job, don't get me wrong, it's just sometimes I look at the children I treat and can't help but wish for that life. Where everything is perfect and you aren't' the unlucky child who was born a mistake. The life of a normal child...
"Hurry up Linsey!" The older boy groaned.
"Slow down Jake. I want candy too." She frowned as her older brother ran ahead.
"Girl you'll get candy." I smiled to the poor girl who had now fallen to her knees in a futile attempt to catch her brother.
Linsey didn't hear me or see me, no one could. I didn't mind. It made my job easier and I didn't want to be believed in. Who would want to believe in someone who delivered things that make you scream anyway? I smiled bitterly as I walked up to the little girl. I used my powers to produce candy in the air around her. She smiled the biggest I've ever seen a child smile in years. She was young, around three or four, so I knew floating candy would be forgotten as she grew up.
"Candy!" she smiled.
"Yes sweetie candy." I replied still knowing she couldn't hear me.
She put the candy in her little pumpkin bag and then ran off after her brother. I sighed and walked to an abandoned building. I climbed the stairs quickly all the way to the roof. I didn't have powers that allow me to fly or anything so I always walked or rode my horse everywhere. Moondust, my horse, was busy doing something with shadow tonight, his girlfriend. Yes even my horse was believed in enough to have a girlfriend.
"How about it man in the moon. Will I ever have a taste of romance or that unconditional love children are supposed to receive from their parents?" I laughed cynically to the moon.
As usual he didn't reply but instead glowed just that little bit brighter. I resisted the overwhelming urge to roll my eyes and finally settled on the roof. From my vantage point I could see all of the town that was celebrating Halloween. It was a perfect picture of beauty. One that simply would have no justice weather captured in a picture or recounted in meaningless words. I memorized every detail of the shining city lights and the soft glows of the residential outskirts. Then I descended the stairs and ran through the city making sure everyone was having a scary and happy Halloween.
I finished my run through the city and made my way down the coastline. As it was only Halloween in half the world due to the date line I was able to survive without my horse. Moondust isn't just another ordinary horse you see. He can run up to the speed or light. He is basically Santa's sleigh if I were Santa. It must be nice to be Santa, you know to be someone and have a purpose. I made my way half way around the world and smiled. New record, It was only midnight. I made my way down to the town i was found in. Everyone was asleep by now so I could go home without anyone seeing. I walked into the old cemetery and over to the angel of music shrine. I lived in Vienna, yes the musical town where Beethoven apparently passed and was buried. Beautiful town.
"Sing a song to me." I sung to the angel then played my pan flute to open the secret door to my home.
I crawled down the stairs below the angel's wings and into my secret domain. Music sheets lined the old brown walls and instruments lay all around the house. The furniture was red and gothic style, given to me by my father of course. the rom had no windows, just a single door leading to my bedroom which was hardly used. My eyes scanned to room. nothing was out of place, all my music and art supplied were thrown across m desk, as usual. I ignored the chaos and walked into my bedroom where my paintings lined the walls. I shock my head at my life and laid down on the gothic style bed. Sleep took my away to the land of dreams which were soon turned into nightmares.
Pitch was back.
