"Excuse me,"
I loved watching the words roll off his tongue as he spoke to me. Lucas was a dazzling personality and I enjoyed listening to his voice. In the halls at school when he talked to his friends, in English class when he read pages of The Color Purple aloud, and even when he was just merely asking a teacher a question about an assignment.
Lucas wasn't like most guys. He wasn't a hustler, or a pimp, or a player. Unlike them, he was bright and extremely intelligent.
I swear every girl at school is head-over-heels in love with Lucas. I was too, but those girls all had something I didn't-- a chance. Lucas was far too special and far too popular to notice me. I was a kinky-headed mixed girl. He'd probably rather go out with a preppy blond or a model status brunette. It's not likely for a white guy to choose us sisters over some white girls.
When he spoke it was almost as if he had read it over and over and he was simply reciting it to someone. Lucas spoke with finesse.
It was the same here.
I was working my usual three to six pm shift at Betty's Diner. I was just wiping the tables before the end of the day until Lucas comes and sits down at the table I was scrubbing.
If it were any other customer, I would've been extremely pissed. But since this was Lucas-- the only guy I had a huge crush on-- my anger became nonexistent in a matter of seconds.
Lucas looked up at me with a kind smile.
"Hello. Are you guys still open?"
The minute his voice became audible, I couldn't help but stand with my mouth open.
Lucas' silky, feathered light ash blond hair and light winter grey eyes glittered in the mid autumn overcast.
My mouth could only utter sentences.
"Uh-uh...y-yeah, sure. W-w-what'll you have?"
He looked into space thinking, while rubbing his pointer finger on his masculine chin in the process.
It was hard to hold back the grin inside of me.
"Lemme just have a coffee-- dark and strong."
I walked around to the counter and reached for the coffee pitcher to pour Lucas' coffee. The sound of the coffee rippling into the cup echoed throughout the dining area. Besides the sound of the coffee pouring, it was completely silent.
"So, you in school?"
Lucas pulled this question out of nowhere and I was fully shocked.
He had never spoken a word to me, or even acknowledged my existence, until now. I couldn't just ignore him. I was stuck on what to say.
"Hello?" He asked trying to reconfirm my presence.
"Oh um, I'm sorry I'm just a little zoned out from my *sigh* hectic work day." I apologized rushing over to his seat with his drink.
"Oh it's alright" He said.
I sat his coffee on a coaster in front of him and wiped the remaining grounds on my apron. I took my ring off of my index finger and wiped the extras out of the inside. I frowned. Hey, my fingers would've looked worse if I hadn't gotten that manicure last weekend I thought to myself.
"I'm sorry what did you ask me?" I asked finally mustering up some courage.
"Oh, I asked if you were in school. Oh heck, you're probably a grown woman who's married, hence the ring."
