Christian Bay is a very complicated guy. He hardly ever shows up to school, and when he does he's always getting into fights and messing with the freshmen. Melinda Alder can't stand him - he's always putting her down and calling her names - but then again she doesn't really know him. He's secretive and suspicious, and even when his brick walls of toughness break down, he still doesn't tell the whole truth.
Once paired together for an English project, they are forced to spend more time together, and soon she realizes that he's something she never imagined, and she learns the reasons why he is the way he is.
