The warm aroma of freshly brewed coffee made me slightly smile as I dug my head further into the cozy duvet, knowing what was to come.

"Amelia."

 I groaned as I heard the soft whisper, no doubt coming from my lovely older sister that got joy from trying to make me as much of a morning person as she was.

I slightly opened my eyes to look at the clock next to me groaning at the time it showed. "Catherine, it's five in the morning." I complained snuggling further into my warm paradise.

"But it's the first day of school! I wanted to help you get ready, my little sister is starting her last year of high school." She squealed, sitting on the foot of my bed.

I chuckled and reluctantly sat up, accepting the cup of coffee she held out. "You know I don't have to get up until seven, right?"

She bit her lip looking at me guiltily "What can I say, I was excited."

I took a big sip from the mug in my hands before looking up at her and playfully rolling my eyes, standing up. "Well, where do we start?"

~~~
I let out a loud exhale as I stared at the big building in front of me, letting it soak in that this would be my last first day at this place.
"Mellie?" I turned around and was greeted by a pair of dark brown eyes that I was more than familiar with.
"Julian," I exclaimed before getting engulfed in a hug "How was your mom's?"
I'd known Julian for what felt like forever, he and I were in the same History class back in middle school and after countless group projects and presentations, we had become close friends and still were pretty close six years later.
"Same as always, complaining about my dad and trying to coax me to move back to Florida with her. As if two and half months with her each year isn't torturous enough." He sighed, leaning up against the railing of the staircase leading up to the school behind him.
Julian's parents had been divorced since long before I had met him and while he lived here in Washington with his dad, he visited his mom down in Florida every summer. Which mainly consisted of meeting her new boyfriend of the month and her complaining that he should move back to Florida, at least according to Julian.
"But you know, what are you gonna do? How was yours?" He asked nudging my shoulder playfully giving me a quick smile.
"Same as always, I helped Catherine out at the diner and pretty much binge watched shows when I wasn't working." I laughed, walking up a few steps to be at eye level with the almost 6-foot brunette in front of me.
"Dork." He joked, playfully rolling his eyes at me. He looked up at the door of the building as the school bell started to ring. "What's your first period?"
"English with Anderson, you?" I sighed looking at the schedule I had on my phone, although English was my best subject, having it at 7:30 in the morning was going to be a pain in the ass.
"Art with Jacobs" He smirked triumphantly as I groaned.
"Fuck you, Julian."
"Have a nice day too Mel." He winked, jogging up the front steps and into the building.
I grasped the backpack on my shoulder and followed behind into the building. The best part about being a senior was that all my classes were on the first floor which, to a lazy ass like me, sounded absolutely perfect.
As I walked into the half full classroom, I greeted my teacher and took a seat near the back of the class. Not wanting to be in that weird zone near the front where you're forced to make awkward eye contact with the teacher and answer all the questions they throw at you. I bent my torso down to get a notebook and pen out from the bag I had set down on the floor, when I felt a presence next to me.
I looked up and saw a pair of green eyes looking curiously over at me from the desk to my right. I smiled hesitantly and wondered who the fuck this guy was and why he was staring at me all of a sudden.
"Hey, I'm Michael" He finally spoke, his slightly chapped lips forming a smile.
"I'm Amelia." I replied glancing at the front of the class where the teacher was still greeting students that were walking in, and then looked back at the green eyed boy next to me.
"Sorry if I was staring, but you just seem familiar." He explained, still looking quizzically at me.
I gave him a silent nod before turning to the front of the class once again where the teacher started to welcome us all and introduce us to what we we're gonna cover throughout the next couple months. But, throughout the whole hour and half I could barely focus since I kept feeling Michael's eyes on me.
I was more than relieved when the bell finally rang, quickly gathering my things and walking out of the room toward my Spanish class. Since this was my fourth year of Spanish, I was more than familiar with the people in the room and saw one of the closest friends I had in that class, Ashton, gesturing me to sit in front of him. I happily took the offer and set my things down on top of the desk.
"Mellie, thank god! So many people got switched out of this class and I was literally about to jump out that window if you didn't walk into this classroom today." He said, leaning over and kissing my forehead "Bless your heart."
I rolled my eyes and laughed at his dramatics. "You'd be just fine without me, Irwin."
"Not true." He countered "You're the only thing keeping me from completely bombing this course."
"Wow Ash, so you only like me for my brain, I see how it is." I gasped playfully, holding a hand over my heart.
"Damn straight! That big brain of yours is the only reason I'm keeping you around." He chuckled.
I grinned back at him as the lesson started and Ms. Fernandez welcomed us all back and gave us our first assignment of the year, a worksheet to be filled out with a partner. I immediately turned my body toward Ashton and started filling in the blanks on the paper.
"Smart ass" Ashton mumbled, sticking his tongue out at me. "How was your first class?"
"It was alright, a guy that sat next to me kept staring at me throughout the whole thing though."
"Who?"
"Michael? I've never seen him around before so I'm pretty sure he's new." I replied, considering the fact that my high school was pretty tiny, if he'd gone here before I would've seen him at one time or another.
"Clifford? Blonde hair? Green eyes?" He asked looking up at me.
"That'd be the one I guess, I never got his last name."
"He's a mate of mine." Ashton explained, beginning to write on his own worksheet "Well kind of, our families know each other quite well. He just moved here from California about a month ago."
I hummed back and continued to work on my worksheet until the bell rang once again.
"Sit together at lunch?" Ash asked turning our papers in to the teacher at her desk.
"Of course, Ashton." I smiled, having lunch together was pretty much a ritual since freshman year.
"I'll see you then love." He replied bending down to kiss my cheek before walking out the door.
I walked out of the classroom partly excited for the rest of my first day and partly excited for the last bell to ring and for me to be able to go home.
