Chapter Five: Worms Are People Too

Chloe's Point of View

Chloe sat on a log, four of which were set up in a sort of square in the clearing they'd found. Her brother sat on the log perpendicular to her, staring at the girl lying unconscious on the ground in the centre of the square. His head was tilted, his eyes wide with worry and curiosity. The same curiosity that got us into this mess.

'Chloe it'll be easy' he said 'Chloe, we gotta help' he said. Now we're the ones who've been sitting in a clearing for the past six hours watching someone who was probably dead. Chloe picked up the girl's knife, the one she'd used to kill the bear, and looked at it for a while.

The shape was unusual, but she though she'd seen something like it before. She pondered this as she spun the blade on the ground, unconsciously digging a hole in the ground and decapitating a worm. Caleb's eyes, for the first time, left the unconscious girl and shot straight up at me.

"What'd ya do," he said accusatorially as he walked towards his sister.

"Nothing," she said, rolling her eyes, "It's just a worm." He bent down and took the worm into his hands. Small droplets of blood leaked into his hand, the dying worm's body still squirming spastically. He took a cautious step away from Chloe, like he didn't want her to cause any more trouble for the worm. Caleb dug a small hole for the worm as he made a small tombstone out of hardening dirt. Before the worm was placed in his little grave, Caleb gave it a little kiss."That's disgusting," Chloe said.

"No, it's not," Caleb responded.

"Is too," Chloe shot back.

"Is not!"

"Is too,"

"Is not,"

"Is too,"

"Is not,"

"Is too,"

"You're the one that killed it!" Caleb yelled. The girl on the ground stirred, but didn't wake up, squirming around on the ground like the dead worm. I guess she's not dead after all, Chloe thought. Then, of course, it was back to the worm. Now properly in his grave, the dirt was filled in and the tombstone was put up.

"Would you like to say some words?" Caleb asked, looking at Chloe with his so called "irresistible puppy dog eyes."

"No, not really," She responded. Not so irresistible then, were they. Caleb crossed his hands over his chest for a minute, pouting. But he quickly went back to his "ceremony".

"For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Jesus Christ our Lord. Romans 8:38+9." Caleb started.

"You're quoting the bible at a worm's funeral?" Chloe laughed.

"Ya, shut up.  Y'er ruinin' it!" he shouted angrily, stomping his knee on the ground because he was kneeling.  With that, there was a sound from the unconscious girl. She wasn't so unconscious anymore.

Slowly, the girl sat up and opened her eyes. She let out a loud groan and gripped her shoulder. That shut Caleb up. Immediately, he'd forgotten about the worm and was right by her side. He helped steady her and walked her to one of the logs. Chloe watched them from the side for a minute until the girl noticed her. The girl gave her a kid smile and polite nod. Though Chloe didn't completely trust the girl, she knew that she was weak and injured. Not to mention that Chloe had her strange knife.
