Chapter 1- Train Crash
I stood hiding in the dark trees next to the railway track. I knew something was going to happen here tonight. It would either be a train crash, a drunk teenager running across the track or maybe even a car stuck on the track. I think it’ll be a train crash.
Whatever it was, I was aware that some people were going to die tonight, as morbid as that may sound. It was my job to take their souls away from the, no doubt, messy scene I was going to witness.
It begun to get cooler, and I pulled my navy blue jacket closer to my body, checking the time on my watch as I did so. It was 10:30pm. Any minute now. I took a step closer towards the track and peered down it. In the distance, I saw two bright headlights staring down at me. I turned my head to look the other way and saw another set of headlights looking my way. My attention was then taken to the track. I noticed the track had been switched. So, I was right. It was going to be a train crash that I would have to clear up tonight.
I took out a small notebook that I carried everywhere with me. It was plain black and had a pen to match. I opened the notebook to the page I had the small fabric bookmark lying on. On this page, I’d drawn a tally chart. One column said ‘right’ and the other said ‘wrong’. I put a tally mark next to the ‘right’ column. My life was so boring and never-ending, that I had to amuse myself with these silly little games. This one was to see how many times I was right at guessing what was going to happen at the accident. I was impressed with myself, I’d only been wrong three times in the one-hundred-and-four years I’d been doing this ‘job’. Of course, I didn’t look one-hundred-and-four, because that would just arouse suspicion to the people I saw everyday.
I started this when I was twenty. My life had just started at that time. I’d decided to get a job. I still remember when I’d begun to walk across the road, heading towards the office I was going to have an interview in. That road had been the beginning of the end of my life.
As I’d quickly run across the road, I had heard my name being called.
“Ethan! Ethan stop!” A female voice had shouted.
I stopped in the middle of the road and turned around to see a short woman with black hair and red highlights. I had instantly recognised her as a girl I had once dated a few years back. Except then she didn’t have the highlights and I honestly had to say she was more attractive back then.
I remember, as I was about to retrace my footsteps back to her side of the road, I saw a truck. And that was it. The last thing I’d remembered was lying there in the middle of the road, and seeing the white light. Just as I was about to go towards it, someone had spoken to me.
“Ethan. I can’t do this job anymore… After doing it for so long, you get so tired, so lonely and so bored… But there’s where you come in… I found a loop-hole… What do you say? Care to live a little longer? You’re young, you have your whole life…” The voice had said.
At the time all I wanted was for the pain to go away. I had weakly nodded and that’s how I got to where I was today. The mysterious man had left, and given me his ‘gift’. Looking back, I now wish I’d died then. This ‘job’ he had passed to me did begin to bore me and I was tired of it.
However, before I was going to try and give up this job, I needed to get to my goal on the number of times I guessed right for an accident. Call it pride, but I needed things to keep me occupied. After this soon-to-be accident, I only needed one more right guess, and then I could begin trying to find out how to lose this ‘job’.
