The walk home was frightening and uncomfortable with my mind drifting off to what I had seen earlier in the day.

It was late after 4pm and the streets of Chetwynd were far from silent with families chatting and eating on their porches and fathers and mothers head home after a long day at work. My neighborhood was very humble and decent looking with middle sized houses placed linear to each other and with welcoming and friendly people who always greeted you with fresh baked cookies and smiles. Most houses were colorfully painted with bright smoothing colours and most graders outside the porch looked outstanding.

I like it here. I feel safe.

Victor's house wasn't very far from Wordbag High, like a 15 minutes walk. I don't have a car so I stick to exercise.

As I reach the maroon home with the heavily painted porch I feel relieved to finally have reached home.

" Hey there Mia how was school today? "

I turned warmly to our neighbors across the street.

" Just the usual Brad " I smiled back.

Brad Gormer lived with his wife Nelda Gormer and he had just retired after working as a contractor for 50 years. He had a chubby face, big bright brown eyes and a loving smile. He was currently fixing the flower pots on the window.

" Well better days are get to come" he said with a husky laugh.

"Is Nelda home? "

" Nah she went grocery shopping, you know how women are. She probably met up with some of her friends and got lost in gossip. "

"Hahaha most probably yeah." I said knowing Nelda loves to gossip.

"Alright, I'll see you around kiddo. " he said absently as he continued arranging his flowers.

I entered the front door and was instantly attacked by the smell of cinnamon, freshly baked bread and tea. I looked around at the simple yet neatly decorated house. The white cotton sofas encircled the small wooden living room table to the right. The table to the right at the corner of the room where I usually did my homework was arranged and cleaned.
I heard whistling coming from the kitchen.

Victor.

I entered the kitchen slowly to remain unnoticed.

Victor had his back facing me as he was busy chopping vegetables and whistling to himself. His lean yet strong body swayed happily to the song and he looked lost within himself.

He must have noticed my presence because he swiftly turned revealing his big green eyes, my mother's eyes. And his broad smile.

"Well look who didn't run away. " he said as he walked over and engulfed me into a hug.

" How could I when my uncle happens to be a cop. " Yup.

" And the best one there is in the whole of Canada. " he winked at me.

I rolled my eyes and sat on one of the stools. The kitchen wasn't big but it wasn't small either, there were cupboards and the kitchen appliances encircling the room with a dinning table in the middle.

" So how was school? " Victor asked casting me a glance as he continued making dinner.

" Same old same old " I said uninterested and slightly annoyed. I wish people could stop asking me about school.

" Did you atleast try to have fun?" he asked sounding disappointed.

After my parents accident last winter none of us had really been the same. I had lost a mother and a father and Victor had lost a sister. After a while Victor had gotten it together and moved on. I wasn't so fortunate.

"I'm gonna go take a shower" I say while hopping off the chair and ignoring his question. I make my way towards the stairs passing the numerous pictures of me from my albums (Victor insisted on putting them up) and heading to my bedroom.

I open the door swiftly and start to enter as my breath catches in my throat and legs feel numb as they can no longer move. The lights arnt turned on but with the light coming from my window I can easily make out a figure on my bed.

I start to back off but I notice the reflection of a diamond earing that's just too familiar to mistake.

"What are you doing here?"

Just for clarification Chetwynd is not a place I made up its actually a district located in northeastern British Columbia, Canada. It is the most relevant setting for Mia's home and neighborhood. Of course the story will have numerous settings but this one is the most important.

Keep reading as there a huge upcoming twist 😏

Can anyone guess who was in Mia's room??
