"Has he eaten at all?"

"He says he eats big lunches."

"And you believe him?"

"...yes, why shouldn't I?"

"He has a problem, Judy."

"He just fainted from exasperation."

"He's sick."

"I think it was just a one time thing."

"Have you weighed him lately?"

"Yes, at his physical in May, he was 150."

"That's tiny for a growing boy like him."

"He's a thin boy, Richard, he has my metabolism."

"I think we should weigh him again."

"Not now, he's been through enough as it is!"

I stand from the top of the stairs, where I'd been listening to my parents in the living room my go back to my room and call Dan.

I tell him everything.

"Drink lots of water before they weigh you. It'll seem like you're heavier than you are." He says.

"Shouldn't I just eat-"

"Don't you want nice hips? A thigh gap? Flat belly? Are you just going to throw all your progress out the window because you lost one race and your parents are catching on?"

"I don't want to end up in the hospital, Dan."

"Well you'll have to be more careful, won't you?"
