"Yes, Mrs. McKenzie, Lucky will be just fine. Dr. Jennings said he'll be a-okay. Just make sure you rub the ointment on the sore three times a day and mix the antibiotic into some soft dog food once a day. And don't forget to make a check up appointment with Tasha up front and we'll see you and Lucky in a week or so." I smile, scratching the little Pomeranian behind the ear.
"Thank you so much, sweetheart. Tell your sister I said hi." the sweet elderly woman smiles, picking up her pooch and heading out of the examination room.
I smile to myself as I put away the gauze and extra supplies. Heading to Lab 3, I find Dr. Jennings looking at a set of X-rays. "Hey, Charlotte."
"Oh, Nikki, hi. You get Mrs. McKenzie all straightened out?" She said not looking up from the films.
"Yup, sure did. I'm headed out to grab some lunch if you can spare me for a bit." I say leaning on the doorjamb.
"Yeah, go ahead. Actually, will you bring me something back while you're out?" She said looking up and rummaging through her lab coat pockets.
"The usual?" I asked taking the twenty from her.
"Yes. And make sure they don't skimp on the fries. It's the highlight of my day." She smiles, going back to her films.
I head out to this amazing diner off the beaten path to grab lunch. While I wait to get my order taken, I call Bailey. She picks up on the fourth ring. "Hi-lo. What's up?" She spoke from her end.
"Just grabbing lunch. How's work going?" I ask glancing around the room from my seat next to a window.
The walls are lined with license plates from every place imaginable- the US, Canada, even a few from across the world. The booths that line the two adjacent walls are patterned with red and blue booths. The tables and chairs in the middle were a variety of shapes and sizes matching only in colors of blue and red. Even the silverware on the tables didn't match, but it wasn't tacky. If anything, it made the place homey.
"Lots of blooper moments today, unfortunately. I will definitely not be getting home on any semblance of time tonight. We've been reshooting the same scene since 10." She sounds frustrated, but I know she secretly loved it anyway.
"Oh, that sucks. I had hoped we could veg out watching RENT tonight." I'm only slightly disappointed. She loves her job and it's not like we don't get to see each other. We live together so we get to see each other at least a few times a week. With her on set and me on call for vet emergencies, we sometimes are like ships passing in the night.
Bailey is my best friend in the whole world next to my sister, Sydney. We've been friends since my junior year of high school and we've been together ever since. Even my family loves her. Both Sydney and I consider her a sister. And after she lived with us for her senior year, there was no denying that she was a member of our family. After she graduated college early, we moved in together. That was a little over a year ago.
"Uhhhh, now I wish I could make it tonight!" Bailey groans. I knew mentioning RENT would get her.
I smirk, "It's okay, another time. Did you get the message I left on the fridge for you last night?"
"From Henry? Yeah, I called him back. We are still having a hard time planning with our crazy work schedules." She sounds frustrated.
"Hey, breathe. It'll all work out. The wedding isn't for another year. You still have time to worry about details."
"It's 7 months, Nicole. Almost 6. That's not a year away anymore." Someone starts talking to her and things started to get heated. "Nicole, I've got to go. I swear some of these interns are completely floundering."
I laugh, "Okay, take it easy on them that was you not too long ago, missy. I'll talk to you later."
"Yeah, yeah. Love you, bye." And with that she hung up.

After lunch, the day got hectic really fast. Tasha had accidentally double booked three of our appointments and we had a line of walk ins. By the time I make it home, it is already past midnight. I kick off my shoes and hang my jacket on the hook.Turns out Bailey beat me home. I found her passed out in front of the TV with a list of catering companies scribbled through on a notepad. I shake her awake. "Any progress tonight?" I say, flopping down next to her on the couch, grabbing her bowl of popcorn.
"Mmmmm, sleep. I need it." She mumbles into the couch cushion.
I poke her in the ribs with my foot. Over a mouthful of popcorn I ask, "Come on! You're pad looks like a freaking jigsaw puzzle. What did you figure out?"
She lifts her head and glares at me. I laugh at the crease on her face. "Come on, sleepy head. Just ten minutes and then off to bed."
Grunting, she sits up. Running her hand through her ash hair, she began, "Well, Henry and his parents helped narrow the list down to nine different catering companies. After we got the budget figured out last month, I was able to narrow it down to five. And after visiting their sites, I decided two of them were a little too ridiculous. Like fancy ridiculous. None of our family and friends will have any idea what's on the menu with those guys."
"So you got it down to three?" Popping another pinch of popcorn into my mouth.
"Yeah," she yawns, "and I called and left a message to have them call me back to make tasting appointments for each."
"That's great. So we've got the maid of honor, matron of honor, and bridesmaids dresses; the venue; the guest list." I tick off. "So we just have to get your wedding dress, the food, flowers, invites, and bachelorette party under our belt and you'll be home free."
"You make that sound like such a small list." She comments dryly.
"It is when you have Henry, Sydney, and me. No prob. We'll have you ready to say 'I do' in no time!"
She smiles softly at me, "I love you, dork."
I take this opportunity to pounce on her with love. Crushing her into the couch, I squeeze the life out of her in the biggest bear hug of my life. "I love you too, loser!"
Laughing, she squeals "Get off me!"
"Alright, alright." I slide onto to carpet between the couch and the coffee table. Bailey tosses a handful of popcorn at me.
We talk for another twenty minutes before calling it a night. We both have early mornings tomorrow. And it is going to be another busy day.
This is my first story on here. I'm not used to writing short chapters like this. Let me know what you think. Comment please! Tell me what you liked and didn't! Love the feedback.
