Chapter 7
Two months seemed to fly by. Christine had developed a routine, which consisted of going to school and attending voice lessons three times a week.
Carlotta wasn't acting as mean as she used to. It seemed after Christine spoke up for herself, she was a bit timid to do anything else. So, the powder to make her voice go away and the shampoo to turn her hair green continued to go unused.
Meg was becoming an even better friend, since Christine was really getting to know her. They would spend time together on weekends and on some weekdays when she didn't have voice lessons.
Christine's parents were very busy with their jobs and only made it home in time for dinner most nights. And lately during dinner, their discussions targeted Erik, and it seemed like her parents had a lot of complaints.
"Voice lessons three times a week? It seems like that's a bit much.. Most people your age, in fact most people in general, only get them once or twice a week." Her mother was the vocal professional and thought she knew best.
Christine didn't think so, though. "I think it's great that he's willing to give me lessons three times a week. I mean, you more than anyone should be happy about it. He thinks my voice has potential and I think I'm really improving with his help."
Her mother sighed. "I suppose you're right. I guess I'm just a little skeptical."
Her father chimed in then. "Hey, I've got an idea. Why don't we find out just how much you've improved?" He grinned. "Would you sing for us, sweetheart? We'd love to hear you."
Christine became really excited then and jumped from her seat. It'd been a long time since she and her parents had performed together. She wanted to prove to them just how far she'd come with Erik's help.
-------
It was a Monday when Christine walked to Erik's car after school.
"Hey, Erik," she said while getting in.
"Good afternoon, little one."
Christine could tell he was excited about something. "You ok?"
"Yes, I most definitely am. I wish to share with you some news I received."
"Ok..." She hoped it wasn't bad news.
"There is a competition coming. A vocal competition."
Christine gasped. "Like, where there's a winner and everything?"
"Of course."
"Will there be people my age?"
"Yes. There will be around 75 children in your age group."
"75?" She was really nervous now.
"I sense your nerves. Please, don't feel that way. I have signed you up for it." Erik smiled with satisfaction.
"What? You signed me up? I just don't know.. I'm going to-"
"-be wonderful. You will be. You see, Christine, you have a marvelous gift. Others will be stunned. We will practice harder than ever for the next month. I've already chosen your three songs."
"The competition's next month?" Her face paled. "That's not much time, is it?... And three songs? I have to learn three songs?" Christine was literally shaking in her seat.
Erik chuckled at her nerves. "Please calm down. Everything is going to be fine. You will be so well prepared that the competition will seem like nothing."
