"What is it, Rachel?" I asked as I exited the bathroom.
"Nothing!" she sang back, with her pink lips parted, myrtle-green eyes wide and freckles almost reaching the colour of her pomegranate red hair.
I groaned and wiped my feet on the mat and stepped out. "No. Seriously, Rachel. What in the World is it?"
"I never realised you, uh, dye your hair." she said, as she lowered her gaze and returned to reading Agamemnon on her bed.
I shrugged and walked over to my bed in silence, not missing her cat-green eyes following me. Dusting the yellow bed-cover, I said, "Is that a bad thing?"
"No. I'm just... used to knowing stuff, I guess. Sorry. I made you uncomfortable."
"It's cool." I said, stretching and getting into the covers. "Is something up?"
"Uh, no. Why?"
"Because you sound suspicious, Rachel."
"Oh. Well, it's nothing. Just... a bad dream."
"Oh. Okay." I said, kinda awkward, not wanting to push her.
All too soon, though, she slammed her book on the shared bed-side. "Mary. You're gonna think I'm crazy. But, see, I can, like, you know, I... know stuff. Before it kinda happens, okay?" she gushed, sitting up on her bed single, adjacent to mine, focusing all her attention to me. "You don't have to believe me, but, I've a friend, and I think he's gonna be in trouble. Like, big trouble. You know? I'm not crazy. I know I haven't ever --"
"Hey, Rachel. It's okay. I mean, not your friend being in trouble -- but like, you know, being clairvoyant and stuff. I've seen you. Like, after your eyes get weird, like they glow and stuff and you like, mutter stuff. As a matter of fact," I chuckled, "You seemed to have predicted the bad weather we're in since like last year!"
"Oh.... You're... you noticed?"
"Kinda hard not not to when you're either screaming in your sleep or when you do that weird eye thing mid-conversation...at times."
"Oh...." she said, softly. Her eyes went to an almost Chartreuse green colour, her freckles turned cherry red and her skin blanched. She swallowed. "Oh." she chirped. "It's funny I never heard... of it...."
"Not many people pay attention, Rachel." And neither does she socialise much, but well. "Calm down. It's gonna be lights out in about five minutes. Sleep. You've got a long day, tomorrow."
"Oh, yeah. The bake fest." She breathed out as her skin rouged a bit returned to it's usual peachy complexion. "You're coming, right?"
"Yeah. I will." I said as the clock struck Ten. "Goodnight, Rachel."
Lights out.
I heard Rachel mumble something about my over-use of her name and something that I sounded like "Goodnight."
"Sweet dreams" I whispered back into the dark. She'd been waking up in cold sweat, especially lately.
Middle of the night.
Frozen.
She mumbled just one name every time and then, screamed about a few minutes after. Just one name: "Percy."
