Chapter 3
Julie wiggled her eyebrows under her mask at me. I had nothing else to do but face palm.
"What?" I asked her.
She started singing a super old song.
"Nearr, farrrr, wherever you are!"
I hid behind my back pack.
"Would you quit it!" I yelled at her in a hushed tone. She gave me her signature "Oh I have totally caught you" look. I stared down at my hands. "Tell." She demanded. I stared back at her reassuringly. "What is there to tell?" I questioned her, giving her a smug look. She narrowed her bright blue eyes at me. "Dont play dumb with me girly. Talk. Now." I talked through a fake smile, "Not right now, Jules." She rolled her eyes at me.
I couldn't risk the door boy hearing any of this conversation.... I really needed to figure out his name. Why was he always staring at me? "I thought your precious masks were supposed to fix this problem, Diana." I muttered to myself. "What'd you say?" Julie asked me. I shook my head at looked out the window.
I remembered the time I first met Julie.
*Flashback*
First day of preschool. I shyly stepped onto the colorful foam mat. I looked around the bright classroom. Interesting insects and animals were painted onto the walls. I saw a girl with wild blonde hair at the building blocks area. She was trying to build a huge house. She was having a bit of trouble. Everytime she would put the finishing touches on the house, a boy would come and knock it over. (Little did she know she would marry that same boy in the future.) She finally stopped trying and schemed her revenge. Once more, she built up her tiny domain. She took careful note of the boy sneaking up behind her. Right as he ran up behind her, she shot her foot out. Thud! The blonde haired girl broke out into laughter as the boy face planted into the mat. I couldn't help myself, as I started to laugh myself.
The boy stood up, rubbed his red cheek, and ran away to the bathrooms. Julie placed the finishing touches on her dream home. I awkwardly looked around and saw a flower pot on the teacher's desk. I picked one of the flowers and crossed over to the building block mat. I put the flower on top of the house. "Why did you do that?" Julie asked me. I thought about for a second. "I like flowers." I responded in my tiny voice. She giggled. "You are so weird, but I guess we could be friends." I was confused, but this was the start of a life long friendship.
*End of Flashback*
Julie and I got into so much trouble as kids. She helped me through my father's sickness and death. I helped her through her home problems.
In first grade, she punched a boy for calling me a nerd. Silly, but thats how close we were.
I remember seeing her face in the crowd when I...I'm getting ahead of myself.
Let's skip onto lunch (back to after the bus incident)..
Here is where things got interesting...
I reached into my lunch pail and pulled out an apple. I took a bite and looked around our school. It wasn't particularly big...more like sweet and quaint. I smiled at the kids around me and took another bite of my apple.
It may seem odd, but I loved just doing that. Sitting and watching the chaos around me. I loved my life, every aspect of it.
I felt eyes on me. From the corner of my eye, I could see someone down the hall. I turned and saw him. He had that stupid smirk on his face. Thirteen years old, and he had already mastered the smirk. The bastard.
The mysterious boy nudged his head toward the hall and he soon disappeared into it. I took one last bite of my apple and threw it away. I looked over to Julie, who was trying to fit as many marshmallows as she could in her mouth.
"Warh ah you gowan?" she mumbled out with her mouth full of marshmallows.
"Erm...I just have to check something." I replied. She proceeded with her face stuffing.
I walked over to the hall which was completely empty. I stared at the posters that hung on the walls until a voice startled me.
"Hello." My mystery boy spoke. My feet were suddenly glued to the floor. I somehow lost my words when he stepped closer to me. I stared into his beautiful brown eyes. Something about him made him shine with perfection. All I could do is gaze in awe of the beautiful human being in front of me. I licked my lips, searching for the words that would escape them. He interupted my thought process.
He took hold of my mask as my breath hitched. He chuckled under his breath. "No one is around to catch us." He lifted up my mask and his eyes lit up like a match. He took the mask off completely and set it down on the ground. He studied my face, soaked up every detail. A new emotion panned across his glimmering face; almost sad.
"Such a shame I can't see this pretty little face everyday." he whispered,
" ...such a shame." I glanced down and then back up at him.
"Harrison."
He said. Harrison? My confusion was clear on my face.
"That's my name...if you were wondering. Harrison Bergeron." He smiled and nodded his head once.
I smiled back to the cute personality in front of me.
"Olivia." I said, back to him.
He gently touched my cheek. "Olivia." he echoed.
The bell rang. I frantically put my mask back on and ran to my back pack. As I ran I heard his voice.
"Good bye, Olivia. Remember to breathe. "
Remember to breathe...now what on earth could that mean...
