Finn came home for spring break with a black eye. "Mom"! He yelled knowing one of them would be home. It was Shea. She looked at him and brushed her hand through her hair. Then she led him to the kitchen and gave him an icepack. "So who started it this time and why?" Finn was happy that Shea was home and not Carolyn. Shea was cool about most things, but she did demand honesty. "I walked to my dorm yesterday evening and in an alley someone hit me in the face. He called me a fag, then he ran off." "Asshole." Muttered Shea. "It's like things are just as bad as they used to be." Finn raised his shoulders. Shea raised one eyebrow. Then she smiled. "I have a surprise for you." Finn looked puzzled. "Since you're mom has to go to a work conference next week, I decided to go and visit an old friend. Carolyn agreed that we should go together. It'll be fun!" She exclaimed as she took the boy in a bear hug. "How long will we be gone?" Asked Finn. "I got a date with Josh on Friday." "We'll be home by Thursday evening." Said Shea.
On Monday they had all their travel things packed and they were on their way. Shea parked her car at the nearby airport. "How far away does your friend live?" Asked Finn. "He lives near Amsterdam." Said Shea. She beamed with excitement, while Finn mainly looked shocked. We're going to Amsterdam? He asked. "Yes!" She nearly screamed. They boarded their plane then Shea explained to Finn that the person they were meeting had indeed had a complicated past. He had done something that Shea would not further specify. The crime he had committed could not be proven, but guild had driven him away from the rest of the world. "He used to live on the north pole." Said Shea. "Thank heavens Dan persuaded him to move to Amsterdam."
Dan was Shea's brother. Finn knew his mother was adopted. She lived in Amsterdam for a while to find her biological parents, but instead she found Carolyn. They moved to America, so that Shea could be close to her brother, and Carolyn could study criminology at Harvard. They had legally gotten married in the Netherlands, and adopted Finn. He was cool with having two moms. Even if they kids at his school would bully him for it. Sure, when he was young he was sometimes angry that his family wasn't like other families. But now he was almost done with highschool. He had gotten rid of his fake friends. His new friends and amazing boyfriend would stand by him whenever some kid mocked him.
At least he was never pressured into dating a girl. He was allowed to see what sparked his interest unlike most kids. After a while he had concluded he was bi, and Josh could be the one.He had often been bullied for this as well off course. The black eye he had received earlier wasn't his first. As Finn was thinking about these matters he fell asleep and he woke up as they were about to touch down. He could see the sea, then pastures and tiny houses, and finally the airport.
They got out if the airplane and at the entrance hall they were greeted by a man who looked like a driver. Indeed he was. He carried their bags to a limousine. "Is your friend rich?" Asked Finn. "You're not supposed to ask that." Answered Shea. "But yes, he is. They drove away from the airport and it took them an hour to get to a huge house, apparently far away from the city. As Shea got out of the car, the front door swung open. A man ran towards them and hugged Shea tightly. Then he gave Finn a handshake and introduced himself as Adrian.
