Skyfall

Emily Fletcher~

I walked out of my husbands and my bedroom and walked down stairs to the laundry room. I grabbed clean laundry from the dryer and gathered it into a laundry basket. I took a deep breath to hear my son, Casey run down the stairs.

"Hey, Casey." I said, kissing his cheek, resting the basket of laundry on my 8 month pregnancy belly. "Do you want me to cook you some breakfast?"

He shook his head. "Not hungry today." He grabbed his searched for his schoolbag throughout the family room.

"Are you alright?" I asked and put my hand on his forehead. He wasn't warm. "You're warm...do you feel sick?"

"No, mom. Just not hungry right now." He said. "Have you seen my schoolbag anywhere?" I walked to the front door and grabbed the blue and black bag full of textbooks. I looked outside the window to see military men pulling up in their military trucks. I slowly put down the bag.

"Mom...?" my son asked. I looked at him and then looked at the men outside.

"Casey, get your father." I said. "Quickly." He nodded and ran up the stairs. "DADD...?" I heard his voice echo through the house.

"Hey, mom..?" My fourteen year old daughter asked, slowly walking down the stairs in her pajamas. "What's going on?"

My husband, Adam scurried down the stairs in a t-shirt and boxers. "What's wrong hon?" I looked at him; chills ran down my back as the military truck doors slammed shut.

"I... I don't know." I said. He put his hand on my waist and looked out the door. A military sergeant walked to our front door. As other military persons walked to other houses. I backed away and let Adam be in front. "Kid's, go upstairs."

"Hello...uh... Mr. Adam Fletcher?" The military man said. His voice was strong, deep, and firm.

"Yes." My husband said. "What is this?" I put my arms around his back.

"Has anyone in your household been attacked, bitten, and or scratched in the past twenty four hours?"

"Excuse me?" I looked out behind to see my elderly neighbor, Ms. Susan Johns, being dragged into her front yard by two soldiers.

"Has anyone in your family become randomly ill in the last twenty four hours?" I looked at Adam and the man.

"Adam... Casey has a fever..."

"What is this?!" I said. "That's Ms. Johns. Your people are hurting her!" I Adam blocked me from leaving our house as the men held out two rifles. I gasped.

"What the hell?!" Adam said. Susan was shot in the head, her brains splattering the sidewalk. I gasped, and backed away from the door.

"What the FUCK is happening?!" Adam asked. "Your people just killed some innocent old lady!"

"Sir, I assure you, she was a threat to this whole community."

"How? She was a one hundred and thirty pound 75 year old!" The soldier pushed through Adam and three more men barged in. I dropped the basket of clean clothes as they pushed me to the side. Adam ran to me, and he was hit in the nose with a rifle's back end. I gasped as He held his bloody nose.

"Mom?" Gracelynn asked, running down the stairs with her older brother. "Who are these people? What was that gunshot we just heard?"

"Casey Fletcher?" The sergeant asked, looking at a clipboard.

My son looked at me and looked at Adam. "Yeah..?" The soldiers pulled out their weapons and aimed them at Casey. Grace and I both screamed in horror.
"Step away from your sister. You're coming with us."
"Wait... why?" He walked down the stairs and was instantly shoved to the wall. I cried in shock as they grabbed his arms and dragged him to the front door. "Mom..? Dad..?" He asked for us. I tried running to him, but the sergeant put a gun to my head, and held me back.
"No!" I cried. "He's just a boy!" Gracelynn cried with me as she stood in fear.
"Don't kill him!" My husband pleaded. "He's not bit!" Another soldier put his gun to my husband's head. "He's not bit!"
"I'm not bit!" Case pleaded, his voice shaking. "I swear! Check me! Please! I-I'll do whatever you want! Don't shoot me!"
The pulled my son's shirt off of his body. No bites, scratches or bruises. The soldier's dropped their weapons as he crawled to Adam, wrapping his arms around his father. Grace ran to her brother's side as The men left our house.
"All residence of this neighborhood must be ready to go into a secured military base at 2000 hours." He nodded and walked over Adam and our kids. He closed the door. I took a deep breath and held my pregnant belly.
