Glaucous mist swirled around the orange hues of the evening as they sunk into the corners of the sky. Evening meals ended as oil lamps were blown out, a scent of thick smoke filled the air. Orinthia stood up from the orange clay ground and removed the layer of the accumulated dust off her tunic. Holding the decalescent handle a burning sensation pricked her fingers. She allowed the febrile sensation to enter her body, being quiet by holding in her pain, she walked through the alleyway.
Looking across the dark path, she casted a small orb of light around herself. Scurrying, she glanced across the bustling street determined to seek her mother. Her wooden bench was empty, Orinthia placed the oil lamp on the floor and went to the resting place. Touching the cotton rag, it's worn fibres running along her fingers. Mother's scent weaved between and as she inhaled the smell of sweet honey and roasted oats. Placing It back down gently, a worn hand caressed her skin. "My child, your mother has returned to the Emperor's duty"a raspy voice came from a wise woman. Her sullen skin held ridges of the past, silver hair hanging over her shoulders gracefully. "Thank you"Orinthia replied, only managing to remove her eyes from the woman's face. Walking into the distance, Orinthia's heels twisted in the ground. Creating a cloud of dust, she pushed it away and her gaze did not find the woman.
An urge of adventure surge into her and immediately wrapping her tunic tightly around her body she ran into the darkness.
Mother lied once again, she was filling in the shoes of previous slaves. Serving obnoxious leaders of the kakistocracy, they all were dysfunctional in their roles. But words must not form on the tongue, for a casket awaits a traitor of the mighty Emperor Erebos Rubis.
A slight tingle overcame her body as his soul lurked in the walls of the alley. Orinthia halted for hushed voices tickled the misty air.
"Shhh. Be quiet" a whisper urged from a pair of unknown lips.
Orinthia stood by the wall, her hands tracing the grooves in the gritty wall. Two dark figures stood, one slightly statuesque than another."Ok. But Erebos please... This is not right"- "This is fair, for your screams will not be heard .See your life before your eyes"his words defeated the feeble voice of a woman. Orinthia placed her face around the corner and peered at the most outrageous sight.
Before she could control her moving feet she walked from her safety in the shadows. "Stop!"Orinthia shouted, she walked towards the woman. Her face glistening with a hopeless lament, eyes shut and barely opening. Orinthia crouched on her robes and held the woman's soft hand, the woman's chest rose and fell slowly. A darkness seemed to enclose them as Orinthia's oil lamp flickered desperately. "No..no"she cried, fumbling in the darkness she was looking for a light.
