"Ladies and gentlemen," a loud, deep voice boom through the room of the Massachusetts auditorium, "welcome to our very first annual Technology and Engineering contest. We have students from all over the world competing and I am glad you guys have decided to join us. The judges will be coming around to you shortly. Thank you!"
Today was the day. I don't know why, but I was a nervous wreck today. My hands were shaking and sweating and my heart was racing. I wipe my sweaty palms on my dress. It was a black and knee length. I decided to wear heels and put my hair up in a ponytail. I was never a fan on makeup, but I put on lip gloss.
The auditorium was big. It was illuminated by chandeliers up on the high ceilings and there was a huge stage with a red velvet curtain. Paintings covered the walls and tables were everywhere with inventions on them. People were talking excitedly among each other and I was just standing there. I wish I had someone to talk to.
I felt like I was waiting forever for the judges to come around. I was pacing around my table with my invention on it. I see the judges talking to a girl who was demonstrating her creation. It looked liked a copy machine from where I see it. When the two judges finally came around to me, I was so nervous.
"Hello there. I'm Professor Wenslot and this is Mrs. Jole." said one of the judges. He was probably in his sixties and was wearing a gray suit and holding a clipboard. Well both of the judges were.
"Hi, I'm Autumn Rivers and I will be demonstrating my machine." I picked up a ringed object from the table and placed it onto my head, "This object is called the Memory Retriever. Since I was little, I always wanted to be able to move things with my mind. Everyone said I couldn't, but I never stopped believing in this idea."
"Okay, very intriguing, but will it work?" said Mrs. Jole. She seemed skeptical.
"Yes, but first I need an object." The judge gave me her pen.
"I will move this pen with my brain, but I need to attach a chip to it. This pen doesn't have a mind of their own, but I will give them one. You see, with this chip, it connects the pen with the Memory Retriever. I will start visualizing the object and visualizing it to move. It's that simple. The Memory Retriever will be able to take the image in my head and creates it. It's all in the synapses of the brain."
"Interesting."
I started to visualize the pen moving. At first the judge seemed doubtful, but then the pen started to move. It floated above my hand and back to the Mrs. Jole's hand. She gasped and Professor Wenslot stared wide eyed.
"Does this even obey the law of physics?" said Professor Wenslot.
I shrugged. As a college student at Stanford, I don't even understand how I did this. It certainly didn't look like it obeyed the laws.
When both judges left, they were in shock. I took the a book sized box and placed the Memory Retriever into the box. I realized I left the chip on Mrs. Cole's pen, but I decided not to get it back.
An hour later, a man walks up to the stage holding an envelope. "Ladies and gentlemen, thank you for all your wonderful creation, but there could only be one winner. The winner of this competition would be able to demonstrate their creation in front of many CEOs of technology companies around the world during our next convention next week and everyone is invited. They will also be getting a grant of one million dollars to succeed with their inventions and receiving a plaque. I will be announcing the winner right now."
He opens the envelope he was holding and reads the card. "And the winner is Scott Lansing! Congratulations Scott."
I think I heard people started crying, but I wasn't sure. I thought my world all of sudden turned really blurry and I rushed out of the auditorium. Then I bumped into someone. I looked up and saw a strange figure wearing a mask and black clothes. He started to speak, "Autumn Rivers, it's time."
"What?" I said, shaking.
"June 11, 2018."
"June 11, 2018," I whispered to myself.
