Ai knew he liked her, but he didn't want to say it. She could see it whenever Yui was around. He would get so protective of her. She was so happy for him.
But she started to feel alone again.
He focused so much on her now that he called her Yui occasionally. At some point he even used her as a ploy to earn Yui's trust. She felt the same as with her other friends.

Subaru watched curiously. Ai hasn't spoken much lately, and that's saying something. She hardly even raises her hands when the teachers call.
