I always wanted to see the ocean. Everybody I knew who had seen it told me it was beautiful. Now I know, they're right, but they forgot one minor detail. Sharks.
Me, being the stupid girl I am, didn't think about these creatures. I stood on Pensacola Beach down in Florida, nearly four hundred miles from home. I dug my toes into the soft sand and glanced around the crowded area. Walking forward, I noticed the seagulls crowding around one spot.
Heh, someone dropped food.
It was a yellow flag, and the waves were high. Still, many people swam, and I decided to do so as well. Before I stepped out I noticed there was no lifeguard.
As soon as I stepped into the water I noticed how warm it was compared to the creeks back home in Tennessee. Shells swirled in the gray liquid and seaweed caught onto my ankle. I stepped further and found the sand dipped and I was up to my knees in the water. Another step brought me to ankle deep water again. With it constantly changing, I made it deeper and deeper.
The waves knocked against me, threatening to throw me down. The water was around my waist now, but people were further out. A much larger wave than the ones before smashed onto me. I toppled backward, clawing at the sky and trying to keep my head above water.
Trying.
I came back up completely soaked, my eyes burning from the salt and my nose burning from the water that ran up it.
I frowned at the ocean and started forward again. It wasn't too long until the water reached my chest, one more step and I toppled. I paddled, staying afloat as I couldn't touch anymore. The people I saw before were close. It didn't take long to pass them.
Now, I swam alone further into the ocean. With the shore and people fading in the waves behind me, I wanted to see how far I could go before I got scared and chickened out.
I knew then water was way over my head now, and didn't bother to stop and see.
Something touched my leg and I freaked. I paddled harder, turning around and trying to swim away. The thing rose up and pressed me out of the water.
I clutched onto the gray dorsal fin in front on me, not comprehending what it was I had grabbed. The fin began sinking and I let go, finally realizing what it was and praying it was a dolphin. The animal turned and rammed into my side and I flew out of the water, flapping my arms insistently.
I smacked onto the water on my stomach. Instantly, the animal was beneath me, and I felt it teeth catch my soft underside as it leapt from the ocean. I screamed, reaching one hand out and smacking the side of it's head and clawing as blood bubbled from me.
Pop!
I cracked open an eye and stared at the spot where the now identifiable shark's eye should have been. A juicy substance ran down my fingers. The shark loosened it's hold and I fell into the water.
The shark circled around me and finally swam at me again, this time closing on my leg and dragging me under. I struggled as my flesh tore again, screaming into the water. I smack the other side of it's head, trying to pop the other eye. When I felt the surface of it I pressed my fingers down hard and the shark once again let me go.
Noticing how deep I was and had released most of my air, I struggled toward the surface. The shark circled around again, slamming into my head. Everything blurred and went black.
***
My head was pounding something awful and a painful burning enclosed my leg and hip.
What... What is this? I thought weakly. I opened my eyes but white coated my vision.
I closed my eyes again.
"Hey. Wake up," someone whispered. Then louder,"Come on."
I fluttered my eyes open again and stared at the boy in front of me, well, over me. He had red triangles on his cheeks and a jacket on with the hood pulled over his hair. Black fluff covered the edge of the hood. A white puppy with brown on its ears sat on his head. I blank.
Wait... What?
A girl stood behind him with really dark blue hair and pale gray eyes. Her hair was cut in layers in the back, the second longest part to her jaw line, but in the front it reached a couple inches past her jaw. Another boy stood next to her. He had sun glasses covering his eyes with a baggy jacket on. The top of the jacket stretched over the lower half of his face. He had spiky black hair.
A few feet from him stood another girl, this one an adult. She had long black hair that had small ringlets. Her eyes were red with a darker red ring in them. The kids seemed about my age.
"Are you ok?" asked the boy with the dog.
Yes, I just decided to bleed everywhere. I thought sarcastically.
"Does... it look... like it?" I said through clenched teeth.
"Kiba, we'll take her to the hospital. Come on," the older woman said.
"What if she's an enemy, Kurenai-Sensei?" the boy called Kiba asked.
The boy with the glasses answered,"I doubt an enemy would be wearing that." He motioned to my skimpy black bikini.
Kiba sighed and stood. "Yeah... I don't agree, but yeah..."
I stared at him.
You don't agree but you're ok with this?
I twitched on the ground, it hurt, more than I can describe. I huffed rapidly and squeezed my eyes shut. I shouted out as the woman, Kurenai-sensei, lifted me.
"It'll be ok," she whispered.
I cracked an eye open and looked at her. She turned and began dashing away, the kids running right behind her.
"S-sensei, will s-she be a-a-alright?" stuttered the girl with dark blue hair.
"Yeah, Hinata, she'll be fine,"answered Kurenai-sensei.
I shut my eye, my stomach and leg felt suddenly warm. I knew I'd been bleeding, but that didn't seem to be the cause. I realized how comfortable I was, and relaxed the best I could with the pain.
"Don't go to sleep," I heard Kurenai-sensei tell me.
I opened my eyes a fraction. "But sleep... wants... me..." I could hear how weak I sounded.
"Stay awake, girl," she said in a more demanding tone.
I groaned and tried to keep my eyes open.
Tried.
