Chapter One
"Novak, we got another break-in at the Lansdale house on 42 Wallaby Road." The call came through on the radio just as I was closing my eyes to take a quick nap. Damn it. "I'm on it." I responded back into the walkie talkie that was placed on my shoulder for easy access. I fixed my hat and the buttons on my shirt as I situated myself in order to drive to the residence. I turned my sirens on as I pulled into the street and out of the coffee shop's parking lot.
I wonder who it is this time. I shook my head as the possible criminals came in my mind.
I was fairly new to the force, only being an officer just shy of two years. I loved it, and hated it at the same time. The cruiser was nice and roomy and sometimes they even allowed me to bring my Pit Bull, Riley on some over night ride alongs. She scared quite a few criminals and I loved it. She was a sweetheart normally, but those delinquents didn't need to know that, right?
I sped passed each car, swerving in and out of traffic on these small roads, honking at a few who didn't move out of my way fast enough.
My brother, Gabriel thought I was ill the day I told him that I was enrolling into the Police academy. He said he'd never pictured his younger brother being a 'pig'. It's whatever. He learned to accept my job. And I see him on weekends when I'm not on call.
I got to the residence in less than four minutes, though it seemed longer than that. I paged to the station that I had arrived and was investigating the complaint.
"Hello, ma'am. What seems to be the problem here?" I asked professionally, hoisting my belt up higher on my pants.
Ms. Lansdale pointed to the perpetrator that was sitting on her porch step in front of me. I looked down at him. "Son, what did you do?"
He smirked as he looked up at me. "I ain't your son. And you look around my age, so please, don't flatter yourself."
I refrained from rolling my eyes, as it wasn't a professional thing to do. "Alright, stand up."
"What for? I didn't even steal anything this time."
I looked at Ms. Lansdale for confirmation. "He broke into my home and broke some of my possessions; I want him arrested."
I sighed. "Come on, kid. Don't make this harder on yourself." I urged him.
The boy reluctantly stood up and made a show of stretching before following me back to my patrol car.
"What kinda car is this? A Ford Focus model? The hell? I ain't getting in that, sugar tits."
I sighed. "What's your name, kid?"
