Chapter Two

I called out from work the next day. Dean had been in worse shape than I originally thought. Just like his criminal record, he also had a long list of a medical records as well. He had been in and out of the hospital almost every month since he was six. He suffered everything from chicken pox, to deadly allergies, to broken and dislocated bones.

I swore to myself in that moment, that no matter what the consequences were with my job, I would care and protect this Dean Winchester. Damn the consequences.

I stayed by Dean's bedside in the hospital room that whole day. I had turned my phone on silent so nothing would take me away from him. I cared about what happened to this guy, and yet, I hardly knew anything about him. And the bit of information that I did know, it was from snooping around in his father's folders, which I had yet to return to the station anyhow.

"Novak, you got a call." A nurse announced quietly as she opened the door to the room. I sighed heavily, not really caring who had been on the other line.

"Hello?" I asked curiously as I picked up the phone.

"Novak, where in the hell do you think you are?"

I rolled my eyes. "At the hospital, Shurley. I called out today. Didn't you receive the note?"

"I needed you in, Castiel. If this has anything to do with that Dean Winchester you're-"

I hung up, not really giving a rat's ass what she had to say. Let the bitch fire me. I had enough of her lately anyhow.

I walked back into Dean's room, where a nurse was checking his vitals and whatnot. She looked up at me and smiled. "You had good timing with this one, Officer."

"How so?"

"Had you not brought him in at the time you had, he would have died due to all the drugs that had been in his system."

I let out a small whistle. "Any idea when he will be free to leave?"

The nurse shook her head. "With cases like this? There's really no telling. It could take days, maybe even weeks for him to recover from the blow to his head alone. And then with the drugs mixed in?" She shook her head.

"Thank you." I said as she walked passed me and out of the room holding Dean's chart.

I resumed sitting in the seat I had been in before I had gotten up to answer the call. I looked at my phone and sighed at the thirteen missed calls from my boss.

I decided to lay back and take a small nap while I waited to see if Dean would wake up from his comatose state or not.

An hour passed before I was shaken awake by one of the nurses. "Officer?" He asked me.

I grumbled groggily as I wiped sleep from my eyes and looked at the tall and handsome blond man standing in front of me. "Yes?" I asked.

"We need to bring Mr.Winchester in to operation."

I nodded.

"Are you his family? Or waiting for his family to arrive?"

I looked into the deep chocolate brown eyes of this nurse standing in front of me and debated for a moment whether I should inform him of Sam or not.

"I'm his only family." I raised my hand to show a gold ring on my left finger that I had actually inherited from my father before he passed away when I was thirteen years old.

The nurse nodded. "I need you to sign these waivers for me."

I raised an eyebrow. "Stating what, exactly?"
