My love,
I was in town this morning, I saw the army parade down the main street, they looked so glorious in their light brown uniforms.
They were here to rally us commoners to fight against the German's, their comanding officer gave a speech asking,
"Who will fight the invaders and save our country?"
I thought going to war would win your aproval, I've loved you for a long time Elaine, you should know this. After those nights in the woods, or in the barn, we talked for hours on end, it was the happiest time of my existence.
But you did not feel the same, you told me to stop being a child and realise we come from two different places, You a country girl, living on a farm with your family, Me an acountant in the nearby city. Two places, I agree, but that shouldn't have mattered. You left me and took up that snivelling swine Raymond.
So I called out "I'll join! I will fight for my country, my family and friends! I'll join so the children in the future will not fight this war." Everyone cheered, I felt so proud to be the one to speak first.
Afterwards, I went to the registration office and gave my details, the officer wrote it down and told me to proceed to the man behind him, it was a taylor, he gave me a once over and gave me some uniform, saying it'll probably fit, finally he told me to report in the morning in uniform to leave for the coast.
I'm about to leave so I'll write later,
I love you Elaine, and don't you forget that.Jesse
