Samantha’s Point Of View:
“SO WHEN WE JUST ARRIVE IN BALTIMORE, THE FIRST THING YOU WANT TO DO IS DYE YOUR HAIR A RAINBOW COLOUR? ARE YOU FEELING WELL?” ROSE ASKS, AS HER DARK PURPLE PERFECT HAIR BOUNCE AROUND HER SHOULDERS.
“But you know since day one of being a teenager I wanted rainbow coloured hair.”
“Okay yes I remember that, fine you win.” Rose replies in defeat.
I start to happily twirl around the room and into my seat.
“What would you like done, ma’am?” The hairdresser asks with a grin.
“Rainbow coloured hair.” She looks at me with her jaws ajar and nods in agreement and walks off into a storeroom.
“She thinks I am weird.”
“C’mon Samantha, stop been insecure about everything. Rainbow hair will suit you.” Rose reassures me, I can’t thank her enough for being my best friend up until now. Rose and I have been friends since the sandbox in kindergarten.
“I love you Rose, my dearest best friend.” She gives me an “I know” smile and goes back to reading her magazine.
“Okay, I hope you’re fine with this.” The hairdresser says, while showing me the dye. It’s a mixture of blue, red, pink, green, yellow and purple. I am happy with those colours; I nod my head in agreement and smile to myself. She beckons me to follow her and I do as I am told. I lie down on the chair and she washes my hair and starts to apply shampoo and then back to rinsing. She then towel dry my hair and walks me back to my seat.
“How old are you?” She asks, as she starts to apply the dye onto my hair.
“I am only 20, turning 21 in a couple of months.”
“How about your friend?”
I look over to Rose who’s happily reading her magazine and sigh, “She’s 21.”
“How long have you been here for?”
“We have just arrived today.”
“And you’re not jet lagged or anything?”
“Yeah I am, but I must explore, though I feel for poor Rose.”
“You’re lucky to have a friend like her.” I nod in agreement and smile, yes I am lucky to have a friend like Rose, she’s always been there for me, and she was there for me when my caretakers physically abused me every day. They used to beat me up with electrical cords, belts, shoes, skipping ropes and sticks. They even pushed me around that I blacked out and woke up with an iron on my thighs; I couldn’t do anything, because they were holding my hands. I still have scars around me; each of them has a story to tell. I moved in with Rose when I was 15 years old, well I basically ran away. Everyone used to tease me and hurt me, I felt like I shouldn’t even be alive and I don’t fit in, I tried taking my life away, twice. The last time I tried taking my life away was only last year. I never knew what happened to my parents; apparently they died when I was young. I’ve grown up to be an insecure person and scared of everything and everyone. If I make one mistake, I feel as the whole world hates me and wants to beat me up. My horrid past still lives in me and I have the same dream every night, it’s just one of those things, where you can never get rid of.
“I’ll need to rinse your hair now.” I hear a voice say, I snap out of my train of thoughts and come back to reality. I make my way to the seat I was on before and lie back down. She starts to rinse my hair and I can feel the cold water rushing down my neck.
