My name is Autumn Waters (picture at the top) I am 17, and about three months ago on October 2, 2009, my mother died of terminal cancer, I vividly remember every second of that day like it happened yesterday, and this is exactly how it all played out.
Like every other day I picked up my 6 year old sister, Lily, from school, after pulling into the garage with the soft hum of the engine filling the room, we called to our mum who was almost always in bed, but this day was different. The house was filled with silence, almost as if no one was even home, but mum always responded. Lily, being six years old, didn't piece it together as quickly as I did. Something was wrong, and I could feel it. I flew up the spiralling staircase and threw open my parents bedroom door, hoping there my mother would be. Except the bed was empty, the sheets were wrinkled and the blanket was balled up at the bottom of the bed. I stood quietly, puzzled. A loud gagging noise jolted me from my confused daze which was shortly replaced with horror as the sound of my mothers body colliding with the floor, flooded the silence that once filled the house.
I flung open the bathroom door and stood blankly staring at my mothers cold, lifeless body laying on the now bloodstained white tiling of my parents bathroom. I shakily dialled 9-1-1 and talked to the receptionist about the scene playing before my eyes. My mother began seizing as blood continued to fall from her slightly ajar mouth, and then it all stopped. I memorized every detail of my mothers face, almost as if it was the first time I'd ever seen her, or maybe even the last. I memorized the way her body tensed, fists clenched, eyes wide with terror. She was wearing the same shirt she wore to my graduation, that was once a rosy pink, and is now stained crimson red. The quiet sirens soon became louder, as the paramedics pried my screaming sister off of my mother I stood there, I wasn't scared anymore, or sad, I didn't feel anything, I hardly felt Lily's tiny hands wrap gently around me and grab handfuls of my black Tee-shirt as we followed the gurney into the ambulance.
The hospital called my dad, he met us at the hospital after about half an hour of us being sat in the waiting room by ourselves. When my dad finally arrived Lily ran and clung to him for dear life, and he looked at me, his eyes red and puffy I could tell he'd been crying. He took us down into the cafeteria to get something to eat, Lily decided on red jello, and apple slices. I didn't get anything as I felt like I wouldn't even be able to keep anything down. Then the nightmare continued, beside us sat a table of doctors and one of their pagers went off. On the line I could hear code blue, anxiety filled my system as I tried to tell myself that there is tons of other patients in this hospital, I tried to tell myself that it's not her. That was until the doctor stood up and said code blue in room 261 and my heart dropped, every hair on my body stood on end and a chill ran down my spine as the familiar room number repeated itself in my head. I pushed my seat back and heard my dads voice calling my name muffled by the sound of my heart pounding against my chest cavity, as I heard my chair soon hit the floor, everything playing in slow motion, I started running and I didn't stop, I couldn't stop. I continued sprinting through hallways, and throwing open doors until I found myself outside my mums room again.
Panicked Doctors and nurses swarmed around her body, my eyes focused on the Doctor from downstairs. Then they stopped, nurses shook their heads as the doctor looked at his watch and called the time of death. When everyone started clearing out of the room, just the Doctor stayed and I watched in horror as he pulled the sheet over my mothers head, and unplugged her currently flat lining heart monitor. He looked at her and said something I couldn't quite make out then picked up her chart and walked out of the room, closing the door behind him. Keeping his eyes focused on his shoes, not looking up once. Everything went slow motion as a teenage boy who looked about my age swiftly exited the room just a few doors left to what used to be my mothers room. He looked up with tears streaming down his face, and his glistening chocolate brown eyes met my green ones as I collapsed on the floor, I could hear shuffling and then hands were placed on the small of my back and then muscular arms were soon wrapped around me and that's when everything went black.
