Kale's Point Of View

I sat on the front porch staring at the sunlight, glinting off the ocean waves. It was one of those houses with a deck that ran the length of the house. It was slippery, mostly because the hard, pale wood was covered with sand from the shore of the ocean not even ten feet away. The outside walls of the house were wooden shingles, the color of a soft, faded, yellow. Honey was jealous of my home, even though hers was the baby blue one next to it. I glanced at her house and felt a pang of anger. I wasn't mad because she was away from me. . . . I wasn't mad because she was off pursuing her dream, and living her life, while I was stuck here in this small, boring town. I was jealous.

Jealous that she had a solid path set for her. The ground was wobbly underneath her, but it was there. I knew she would make it to the top. The solid patch of sand that meant she had made it past all of the stress she had endured, and made her life what she wanted to be. Her dreams had become a reality.

Seagulls cried overhead and scanned the beach for food. A young girl slowly inched her way to the water as they crawled up the beach towards her, and squealed when the cold water washed over her feet, running back towards dry land. I almost cracked a smile, but the light feeling in my stomach vanished the moment I realized Honey wouldn't be there to laugh with me.

My phone buzzed and I reached for it, praying the caller ID said-

"Honey?" I asked.

"Kale! I'm sorry I didn't call sooner but this-" She began talking so fast I couldn't understand.

"Wait, Honey, slow down," I laughed and her babbling came to an end.

"Okay, so what's going on with you?" I prompted. I could hear the smile in her voice, which was slightly higher pitched with excitement.

"Kale I got the part! Our first real gig is on the twelfth, and we're touring at local spots all over the city!"

"Wow, that's great Honey, so you're a band geek now?" I joked lightly and she laughed.

"Hardly, I'm still a choir nerd." she laughed once more and then continued, "How are you?" I knew she was worried about me. She probably thought I would be pissed at her for not calling, but I didn't mind much as long as she was happy.

"Mm," I pretended to think about it, "honestly, without you here, I realized just how boring this place is."

"Aw poor Kale, lonely without me. . . " she said sarcastically. "So you haven't noticed any girls recently, now that I'm not there to herd them away from you?" she teased.

I winced at the pain in my chest. She didn't seem at all bothered by the fact that I might have a girlfriend. "Do you want me to?" I asked.

"I want you to be happy Kale," she automatically answered, "Even if it means you're with someone else," my heart jolted at those words, but then throbbed painfully once I reminded myself she didn't feel that way about me.

Before I could reply, she was talking in a rush again, "Oh Kale I'm sorry," she said, and spoke again just as I was about to ask what she was apologizing for, "I have to go." Ugh, how I hated those four words, for they seemed to come from her lips too often, "But I will call you as soon as I can okay?"

I sighed, "Okay,"

"Bye Kale," she used her sweet voice, because she knew her charm was irresistible to me.

"Bye Honey," The line clicked dead and I sighed again, letting my hand fall from my ear and pressing the end button.

Honey, what's happening to you?
