"Ah, there you go, my little Daniel!" Mom said happily. It seemed as if she was glad to see me leave her for the first time. For a whole day.

Mom dressed me in a "cute" blue t-shirt with a baseball on the front, and black soccer shorts with a white stripe down each side. "Oh Daniel, you're growing up so fast," she grinned sadly.

"Mommy, I don't want to go," I whispered softly, afraid I would burst with tears if I spoke any louder. She didn't seem to understand the extreme fear I was dealing with.

"Honey, we've talked about this. You're going to meet lots of new friends, you're going to have a nice teacher, and everything will be fine. Just because I won't be there, doesn't mean things wont be okay," She assured me, hand placed on my shoulder.

I wiped away the tears that started to form. "W-what if t-the people aren't nice?"

"Trust me, everyone will be nice. If someone isn't nice to you, they might have to go in the time out chair," Mom told me. "Now come on, you're going to be late. You don't want to be late on your first day of kindergarten, do you?"

She held my hand while comforting me, trying to take me out to the car. Eventually, it worked. We drove all the way to the school where I would be going for the next ten years of my life. to

I looked out the window to see many children just like me playing and jumping in a little enclosed area next to a red brick wall. I also spotted several other children clinging onto their mother or father's arms.

At that moment, I came to a very sudden decision. All these people were scary and I couldn't do this.

"Mommy, please, you can't leave me here," I cried quietly as she parked her car.

"Sweetie, I have to leave you here. I have to go to work!" She said, hopping out of her seat to come and get me out of the car. "And you have to go to school."

"No, I don't want you to go," i choked, tears spilling down my cheeks so fast I couldn't say anything more. I stuck my bottom lip out, despite the fact that it was quivering like crazy.

"Oh, come on Daniel. Don't give me a hard time, please. Now you have to go to school. You don't have a choice."

Finally, she picked me up and carried me over to the kindergarten gate. Once she set me down on the ground, I continued clutching her arm, which was full of clanking bracelets.

"Mommy, please," I whispered, not wanting to embarrass myself in front of the other kids. Even though I had stopped crying, I knew my scarlet red cheeks were probably still marked with my tears and would give away the fact that I've been acting like a two year old.

"Go on, Daniel. You'll meet lots of new friends," she encouraged me.

I didn't move an inch away from her arm.

I noticed another boy, who seemed to be my age, playing by himself. He stopped what he was doing when he saw me looking at him He began staring at me from afar. He cocked his head to one side, as if I was interesting or something. He finally mustered up the courage to walk over to me, but as he did this, my heart started to pump faster and faster each step he took. I really didn't feel like interacting with the other kids.

"Hi, what's your name?" the little boy asked. I waited a few moments before answering.

"D-Dan," I mumbled.

"My name is Phil," the boy told me in his high-pitched voice.

I was still clinging to Moms arm. I decided to grip her hand even harder. Apparently, Phil noticed.

"Don't worry, Dan, my mommy said that kiddergarden will be lots of fun," he tried to assure me.

"Look, Daniel! Why don't you go play with this nice boy?" Mom urged.

Phil inched a few steps closer to me.

"Do you want to be my friend?" he smiled.

The corners of my lips started to lift. "Okay," I nodded slightly, still being cautious.

Phil took my hand in his. "Come on, I'll show you my secret hideout," he whispered, unaware of the fact that my mom could hear.

I let go of Mom's hand and she giggled. "Have fun Daniel. Bye!"

"Bye Mommy," I waved, but quickly resumed following Phil to his secret hideout.

I followed Phil for a bit, but I had no idea where we were going. I was a bit scared of what i was going to find. "W-where are we going?" I asked, unsure of my surroundings.

"You'll see!" He smiled brightly.

Phil brought me around the corner to a small room-like area that was covered in tree leaves and bushes.

"Here it is!" Phil whispered excitedly. "Do you like it?"

"Yeah, it's so cool," I admitted, still a little shy.

"Teacher doesn't know about this place. We can come here and do anything," He told me quietly.

"Like what? Things teacher doesn't like?" I asked Phil in a small voice. I was embarrassed by how shy and small I appeared compared to him. Again, I was a bit nervous to break some rules for the first time. On my first day of school.

"Well, I know she doesn't like when kids hold hands. Chris and PJ did that on the playground and had to sit in the time out chair." His baby-soft hand brushed against mine, sending a tingle through my body. He took my hand in his. He glanced at me, the same bright smile as before spread across his face. I finally gave in and flashed him a wide grin. I never thought I would be smiling at the place I thought would be a living hell.
