“So…you two. What do you want now? I’ve already summoned your friends, there’s not much more you could want, right?” Aphrodite sighed. Look, I didn’t want to visit the goddess of love in her ‘office’, which, by the way, was full of posters of celebrities, hearts, paintings (the famous ones) of herself, the gods, and her son, Eros. Or, if you want to be technical, Cupid, according to the Romans.
“Um, Aphrodite, we just wanted to ask you a question,” Jack sighed, grimacing around the pink-covered room.
“Okay,” Aphrodite said, while looking through a box of photos.
“Well,” I continued, “we think that er, Jack and I have a past with that girl Alex.” It was weird saying that.
Aphrodite smiled, but didn’t look up from the box.
“What kind of a past? Believe me, I was there when you three first met, I know what you’re talking about. I just want to hear you tell me, so I can make sure we’re talking about the same thing,” Aphrodite sighed. I could tell I blushed, and so did Jack.
“Listen, Aphrodite, just tell them what they need to know,” Hermes said.
Yeah, he came with us on this expedition. Hermes was lounging in a pink chair in the corner, inspecting his shoes. Aphrodite smiled again, and put the box away.
“Alright, alright. You three, just like your parents,” Aphrodite sighed, winking at Hermes, who looked away, “had- and might still have- a sort of….uh, I guess you could say, a love triangle. Just like your parents, Alex first ‘liked’ Paul-”
I could tell I blushed even more.
“-but then started ‘liking’ Jack, too, so with all of the other differences you two had as the Two Sons, Alex just added to the problems. Not that she’s a problem, she’s a very nice girl,” Aphrodite smirked. Hermes stood up. He was appearing younger than Aphrodite, so he still looked around seventeen, while Aphrodite looked about twenty-five.
“Okay, I guessed that,” I said, nervously, “but we need to talk to the Council. Hermes already said he could try and get a meeting.”
“Wait,” Jack sighed, “you guessed what?”
“That there was, um, as Aphrodite said, a ‘love triangle’,” I said, feeling really awkward. Give me a break.
“But I thought you meant that you guessed that Alex liked you first,” Jack said, squinting his eyes.
“Jack,” I groaned, “it’s no big deal, so just-”
“-everybody calm down,” Hermes snapped, now a gold glow around him. For a minute, I thought he was glaring at me, but then I realized he was staring angrily at Aphrodite.
“Aphrodite, I don’t want my son- and nephew- to have the same struggles that my brother and I went through. Stop messing with them,” Hermes said, looking way more than the prankster of Olympus.
Aphrodite put her hands up in defense, but didn’t look scared. She merely sighed (for about the umpteenth time).
“Hermes, darling,” Aphrodite smiled, “I’m not trying to start anything. It’s all in the course of action. I didn’t plan this, and if you’re angry at me, I seriously recommend reconsidering. Ask the Fates, or even an Oracle. Oh, and didn’t Delia predict this?” Aphrodite smiled.
With that, Hermes, Jack, and I were ushered out of the goddess of love’s ‘office’.
