‘Ms Stark, a package has arrived for you downstairs’ JARVIS called through Stark Tower. I opened my eyes as I vaguely heard my Dad’s computerised butler. I was half way through my latest field report for SHIELD. Fury insisted I finish it before the summer. Right I had to finish my homework so I didn’t have any work over the holidays. What was I six?!
I had ditched the field report and had listened to my iPod instead. I had gone through my Bastille, Florence + the Machine and Of Monsters and Men albums and I was listening to Imagine Dragons when I realised that JARVIS was talking to me. I shoved my headphones off and listened again.
‘Ms Stark package for you downstairs’
‘Oh right thanks JARVIS’ I jumped up from the bed and dashed to the door.
‘You’re welcome Ms Stark’ the butler replied. I jogged down the hallway, pulling my long raven hair over my shoulder.‘JARVIS you don’t need to reply to everything I say’ I said and ducked into the elevator.
‘And why not Ms Stark?’ He continued. I just sighed and leant back on the wall. I waited in silence for a while until I heard JARVIS say nonchalantly, ‘Bottom floor Ms Stark’. His tone held something of an injured animal. I could tell he was upset with me. You know because computer voices have feelings!I was too eager to get out of the elevator and smashed right into an Avenger. He had blonde hair, blue eyes and was much taller than me.
‘Sorry Steve’ I said awkwardly.
‘No problem Naveen’ he went into the elevator. I was about to go when I had a burning question. I stopped the elevator doors from closing.
‘Hold on a moment’ I snapped. He looked up at me curiously.
‘Well it’s just Tony and you aren’t exactly…besties’ he just smiled.
‘Bruce said him and Tony were working on an improvement for the uniform’ I nodded.
‘Right, well good luck with that. Just take it easy on him, he’s kinda recovering from a hangover’ he just frowned. It was good Tony had found a project to work on after New York and the situation with the Mandarin. Gees that was some pretty scary shit.
‘Will do’ he said. I turned around and as soon as I heard the elevator go up, I pressed my cold hand to my cheek. It was red hot.I finally got to the front door and I saw a boy in a delivery guy uniform. He was holding a thick sand coloured package. More field notes. Gee thanks Fury. I opened the door and looked him in the eye. He looked only about two years older than me with scruffy chocolate brown hair and ember coloured eyes.
‘Package for Ms Naveen Stark’ he said dead-panned.
‘That’d be me’ I chirped. He handed me a clipboard and a pen.
‘Sign here-here and there too’ he ordered. I gave a puzzled look. I should give this delivery service a letter about customer service. This guy looked like he hadn’t sleep for days.
‘Bad day?’ I asked him signing my name a little slowly.
‘What-I’m- no’
I nodded slightly, totally not buying it. ‘I once had a friend who suffered insomnia’ I say randomly. His eyes shot towards mine.
‘Sorry?’ he says flabbergasted.‘Insomnia… no sleep, restless nights, saggy eyes’ I listed. His brow furrowed.
‘I know I suffer from it. How did you know?’ he asked as though he was asking a very rich, very beautiful girl with the brain of a genius not some 20 year old in grey slacks and a tatty tank top who watches Looney Tunes upside down.‘See that last name’ I pointed out on the clipboard. He looked at it as though he couldn’t read. I snatched the package from his hands.
‘Stark?… so?’
‘There’s your answer’ I turned and sashayed away.
‘Wait-hold on!’ he called after me. But I had already made it into the elevator. I smirked as the elevator closed. But as I looked at the package my entire expression changed.
