Chapter 5

As Gideon and Desmond walked towards the stables Gideon was lost in thought. All he could think about was Rose's reaction to the way the man that had the nerve to slap her. He had seen something in her—it was as if she had gone cold like something or someone else had possessed her.

Gone was the meek little girl she seemed to be back when he first met her in the foyer. Then she seemed scared, ready to run at any second, like someone or something was out to get her, a whole different side of her was shown when they brought Desmond—or rather dragged him. In beating him, Gideon was still disgusted at the way his men or rather his father’s men acted towards Desmond. She had pleaded with his brother and the men that follow him like dogs to let go of Desmond to stop beating them. She had played nice but her voice held a sort of power that made all the men stop, except for that over zealous baboon who dared hit her. That’s when she completely changed and that’s when the rage hit him. He felt a sort of protectiveness that came over him and before he knew it, his feet were moving towards her, to take down the man that dared to strike her.

While he was making his way towards her, he watched, as she seemed to transform. She grew taller, had a glow with her and her eyes turned a deep, deep blue. He looked around and watched the people as he came forward. They were all watching her or him to see what either would do next.

Gideon couldn’t hear her, but he could see her. She cradled the man’s face and as Gideon swung back, he wasn’t sure which caused the terror in the man’s face—his fist or the darkness that was there for only a brief second in Rose's eyes. It was only a flash, but Gideon had seen it. After a second, she turned to him, caressed his cheek to thank him. Gideon almost laughed as her cheeks turned a deep crimson red, realizing how indecent her gesture was, but secretly, he loved it. So lost in thought, it startled Gideon when Desmond finally spoke, "She can come as quite a surprise, Master Gideon, and I promise you there is more to where that came from."

Gideon chuckled. "Indeed, she does. What’s your name, sir?"

"Desmond, sir. And I thank you for protecting her honor and for stopping her before she did anything worse."

Gideon seemed confused. “What do you mean, worse? She was just caressing the man’s face with a look of pure hatred in her eyes. It was not as if she was harming the poor man."

"In time, Master Gideon, you will understand what I mean by worse. If Rose decides to tell you her secret, you will know."

Gideon just nodded his head. Rose and Desmond were the most peculiar pair of people he had ever met, but he had to ask the one question that was eating him up. "Are you and Rose together?"

Desmond chuckled just by looking at Gideon’s face. He knew how awkward it was for him to ask that. He also knew that it was eating him up inside. Just wondering, Desmond could see the care he had for Rose in Gideon’s face.

"No, Master Gideon. I am her guardian sent to protect her, specifically trained to guard her until I am no longer needed. Rose and I are not like others, Master Gideon. I cannot tell you how or why, because it is forbidden. The only one who can tell you is Rose and even she does not know her full potential and responsibilities for this world yet."

Gideon was shocked, but what Desmond had said made him wonder. How did he know? He had not, moments ago, been thinking about how different the two of them were.

Desmond just gave him a knowing look. He was a guardian of the—royals not the ones who pretend to rule this petty kingdom he is in right now, but a guardian of the Princess of Ice. Rose could control water, but she could also drop the temperature in a room or any place within a ten-mile radius.
