Everything Changed
I woke up with the sunlight streaming in from the window. Everything was bright, so bright. And warm. I looked over my shoulder at the man I have known all my life. Now he was my life and I was his.
I turned around as slowly as possible as not to wake him. He tightened his arms around and I was face to face with him. The light created a glow around him, making him look like an angel. His red hair fell over his eyes, covering the eyes I fell in love with. His face was covered in freckles, more around his nose. His soft pink lips were slightly parted, warm breath rushing out as he slept.
I closed my eyes and thought about how we met.
I stood outside my house waiting for the bus to pick me up. I had a white sundress on with my hair falling in locks around my shoulders. I had my new owl backpack on my back. It was the first day of school. I was 10 years old.
The bus came around the corner looking like a big bee. I smiled at the driver as I got in. The bus was filled with preschool kids. Kids I was going to spend the rest of the year with. I looked for a seat but everyone was taken except for a seat next to a boy.
I walked closer to him and took in his appearance. He had orange hair with freckles all over his face. He was concentrating really hard on the comic book he was reading. Now and then he would take a sip of whatever was in the flask he was holding.
I didn’t want to bother him and disturb his concentration so I just sat next to him. He looked up at me as I sat down. He had the kindest eyes I had ever seen. Green so green, like leaves in spring.
He smiled at me and I knew then and there that we would be the best of friends.
At school we had a baking class. Each of us got cookies we could decorate. Everything was a mess. Ed (my best friend from the bus) was sitting next to me making a complete mess of his cookie. He sprayed bubblegum sauce all over it, sprinkling it with colourful sprinkles, making me laugh. There were more sprinkles on the table than on his cookie. He was concentrating so hard. He’s tongue was sticking out at the left side of his mouth.
I looked back at my berry creation. It was way more organised than Ed’s.
After our baking session we made our way to the movie room. The teacher turned off the lights and the projector threw a black and white image on the white board of the Eiffel tower. The next image came up of the Big Ben. Ed was sitting next to me transfixed of the images. I smiled at him.
After a while I got bored. I was looking around at the room, looking for something to do. Ed must have felt my boredom because he was looking at the teacher at her desk writing on some paper. Ed took my hand in his and pulled me quietly out of the class. We made our way out in the hall past all the rows of lockers. He pulled me into the art room. We looked around for a bit.
After a while we both saw the human sized mirror against the wall with buckets of crayons and markers. We looked at each other and smiled. I guess we had the same idea as he ran to the mirror. We picked up markers and started to colour our faces in. My face was covered in blue stripes and my lips were a dark shade of red. Ed looked like he pushed his face in the bucket of markers. His face was covered in all the colours of the rainbow.
He looked past me and saw a canvas in the middle of the room and made his way over to it. He had a black maker in his hand. He looked up at me expectantly. I looked around and an idea popped into my mind. I moved some of the desks and chairs. Ed was frowning probably wondering what I was doing. When I was sure I wouldn’t bump into anything I took a stance in the middle and looked at Ed.
I put my hand in front of me creating a circle and lifted one of my legs in the air. Ed smiled and started to draw on the canvas. After a while I got bored and my leg started to get tired so I started to spin in a circle over and over again. I could see Ed smiling while he drew.
