When I stepped out into the courtyard at lunch, there were only two things on my mind...a place to eat and Luke Smith. In my group, we have to have a boyfriend by 16. You also can't be in the group until you're 16, which makes me new. I just turned 16, which means two things- boys and popularity.
We call ourselves the Socs, short for Socials. We are divided between boys and girls but can only date within the group. Like my bestfriend Charlotte. She's 17 and dating Charles. I don't know much about him, but he's very attractive. Tall, blonde, and he plays on the football team. Eleanor, her sister, is dating my older brother Danny. She's 18 and he's 19, but he's at the local college so we see him quite often.
"So are you gonna come to the Domino tonight to get with Luke?" Charlotte asked me as we walked together to the Soc table.
"Yep." I smiled and noticed Luke looking at me from across the table while Gene and Kurt smoked and ate off of a large tray of fries.
Eleanor had just walked up and sat on the other side of Charlotte and I.
"Hey Charlotte, where's Charles?" Gene asked throwing his cigarette on the ground and stomped on it.
"I don't know. Something about scouting freshman for next year."
"Dammit. He always leaves me out of that!" Kurt scoffed and threw his cigarette. Kurt was my age, he was Gene's cousin so he had been in the group a little longer than me.
"So Danny's bringing me to the Drive in tonight if you guys wanna come." Eleanor said. Even though Eleanor was my brother's girlfriend, I really didn't like her all that much. She was the head of the girl's group though so I didn't think on it much.
"We were planning on going to the Domino, but we'll come afterwards. Charlotte said as Charles walked up.
"Hey babe." he said and kissed her on the cheek. I rolled my eyes and ate my fries ignoring the display of affection.
"Find any noteworthy freshman?" Luke asked
"No. The freshman these days just aren't as physically or mentally ready for what we are."
"Which is?" Kurt laughed
"Men!" Charles made a deep voice and flexed his arms.
"Yeah yeah we know." Eleanor said with everyone laughing.
