Cock-a-doodle-dooooooooooo! Cock-a-doodle-doooooooo!

“Shit!” I sprung up from my bed, scared to death. What was that noise? Where did it come from? After checking my room with my eyes, I just made up an excuse and said it was part of my nightmare. Why have I been having weird dreams lately? With uneven breaths, I looked at my alarm clock, curious as to what time it was.

5:00am in the morning! I have never woken up at this time in the morning. What has been happening to me lately? I went to look at myself in my body length mirror to see if anything had changed about me. Nope, still the same old Mary. I shrugged it off and was about to continue sleeping, when a huge brown rooster came flying- I mean, scurrying out from under my bed. It was frantically flapping its wings all over the place, as if trying to find a way out. Frightened, I cowered into the back corner of my room, trying to keep as far away as possible from the crazy rooster. The rooster finally calmed down and made its way onto my bed. Cock-a-doodle-doo! It sounded, again.

Grumbling, I slid across the wall of my room, afraid to disrupt the rooster and made my way out the door. Slamming the door behind me, I went downstairs to the kitchen. Surprisingly, my mother and father were also awake this morning. But what was even more surprising was that my mother had decided to dye her hair a bright green colour. But, the most surprising thing that was going on was that my parents were throwing different colours of paint on the wall. They were throwing bright greens, reds, pinks, yellows and blues.  The whole house had become a mess. What used to be normal, cream coloured walls was now unicorn barf.

“Mom! Dad! What are you two doing?” I shouted.

My mother turned around and faced me, a smile on her lips, “oh, you woke up early today sweetie. Want to help?”

“Help? You mean it’s ok to throw paint on the walls now?”

“Yes, well, we wanted to spice up the house a little. We’ve had the same cream coloured walls for ages now. It’s gotten awfully boring to look at.” My father said.

“You guys have lost your minds.” I murmured.

“What was that, sunshine?”

“Nothing.”

“Ok well do you want to help or not, it’s a really fun activity.” My mother asked.

“No thanks mum, I think I’ll be heading to school now.” I needed some fresh air to breath. This weirdness is exhausting.

“But it’s so early in the morning Mary. School isn’t even open yet.” My mother reminded me.

I quickly thought of an excuse “Well I just want to walk around.” I said while holding on to my bag and making my way out of the house.

The cold air nipped at my face, making me shiver. The question of why everything had drastically changed these two days kept playing in my head. Maybe it was something in the food that we ate. Is there a new chemical that has been injected into foods? Once I arrived at the school gate, I shook it a little and as I expected, it was locked. I turned around, feeling a little scared and lonely. It was so early in the morning so not many people were walking around.

“Boo.”

I jumped, my heart beating at a dangerously fast pace. Too scared to turn around, I kept my back facing the source of the scare.

“Are you a ghost?” I mentally face-palmed myself. Wow, what a stupid thing to say, way to go Mary. You are now the official queen of stupid.

“Nope, I’m a vampire.”

My eyes widened a little. Ok so now apparently it wasn’t a ghost, but a vampire. Even worse. “So you mean Edward vampire or Dracula vampire?”

I heard an amused chuckle. “Well, which one do you want me to be?”

“I don’t believe in vampires” I said, turning around to face the person, only to find a handsome Owen standing right in front of me. My heart started thudding strongly against my rib cage. He couldn’t have been talking to me, right? I looked around to see if there were any other people around. Owen followed my gaze.

“What’s wrong?” He asked, frowning

I pointed to myself, “Are you talking to me?” I said in disbelief.

“Nope, I’m talking to my imaginary friend.” He said with a smirk.

“Haha, very smart.” I replied with a scowl.

“What are you doing so early this morning?” He asked, a smile playing on his lips.

“I just came here because I needed to get away from my parents; they have started to do weird things.”

“Weird things like..?”

“Like throwing paint all over the walls and making a mess.”

“Wow, they seem really fun to be around.” He laughed.

“Well, now that I told you, you tell me. What are you doing out and about so early in the morning?” I questioned him.

“Nothing much, I was just doing my daily jog around the park when I saw you standing here alone.” He smiled.

“Well, thanks for coming to talk to me.”

“No problem, a girl shouldn’t be alone when there is no one around.”

My face warmed up at what he said. He was such a caring and nice guy.

More and more students had started to arrive at the school. “Hey! Owen!” A guy, who was most likely Owens friend, shouted out.

“Hey! Stan!” Owen shouted back.

Turning back to me, Owen smiled, “Well, I have to go now, but it was fun talking to you, Mar.”

I dreamily smiled back, ok so he still didn’t know my real name, but that’s ok. At least he had gotten closer.”Yeah sure, bye Owen.”

The rest of the day had passed by in a rush. Nothing new happened except for the amazing tap-dance performance from the cooking lady.

Once I had arrived home, I was exhausted. I rested my head on the soft pillows of my bed (after I made my dad shoo out the rooster, of course) and thought of what exciting, unpredictable things would happen tomorrow.
