A/N: A little insight to this. I had to do an assignment where I portrayed myself as one of the girls from the book The Crucible. Just thought I'd share with you all what I wrote.
Today was another successful trial. We condemned Goody Proctor, John Proctor's wife and she was taken to jail. I can't recall how many reside in the town's jail now but it doesn't matter. We've accused so many that soon everyone in Salem will be hanged for false information. That is, if they weren't pressed to death before the hangings.
I never knew humans could be so gullible. Accuse one person of witchcraft and the rest will join them. Its a little sad really, how easily humans crumble before the belief that evil is among us. They don't even try to look for real proof. The word of a teenage girl or another accused person is enough to sign someone's death warrant.
Still, it doesn't justify putting all of these people in jail for something they didn't do. At first, we only accused people of witchcraft to shift the suspicion from us. We were so scared of being hanged that we let the lies drag on. None of us meant for it to go this far but it did and now Salem is paying for it. I know we should confess and tell them that it was all a lie but we're too scared.
Abigail is the reason all this is happening. She started this by drinking the chicken's blood just so she could have John. If only she had never drank the blood then maybe none of this would have happened. However, its not like she's the only one to blame. We all contributed by blaming other people for that night. First was Tituba who then blamed others for working for the devil and so on.
Now everything has gone to ruin and made the town a living nightmare. More and more people will be hanged because of us. Families will suffer and break apart, people will fear their neighbor, and Salem will be driven into madness. I can feel the guilt slowly rising in me because of my fear and naivety. If only we admitted the truth about that night instead of going with Abigail's lies. If only I could say how sorry I was to the people we sent to the rope.
