A smile smile that once grace his lips was gone. Instead, tears streamed down his face, soaking into the denim fabric of his jeans. His thoughts were of her, the girl that he broke who in turn, broke him. He regretted it severely after it happened, but she didn’t know. She didn’t know that he still loved her. She didn’t know that with one word, they could be reunited. She didn’t know that.
And that’s what ruined them both.
He fingered a folded piece of paper. He had lost the envelope long ago, now having nothing to keep the precious paper in. He didn’t dare open it, not wanting to cry even more. But having not read the letter in days, he had to. It was the only thing he had of her.
Opening the paper, he began to read.
Dear Mark.
I didn’t want to say goodbye like this. Trust me, I didn’t. But when you broke up with me for no reason, I didn’t know what to do. I thought you were my one and only, my other half.
I guess I was wrong.
I tried too hard to find a reason to stay alive. I really did. But all along, you were my reason. You were the reason I laughed, smiled, breathed, and even thought I was beautiful.
Not any more.
I’m not at home while I’m writing this. I’m at our playhouse, you know, that old tree house we built when we were younger. I have a bottle of Melatonin in one hand and a razor blade in the other. 44 pills and a sharp edge.
Once I finish this letter, I’ll use them both. You won’t have to worry about seeing my ugly face any more. Because you won’t have to. But remember this.
I. Will. Always. Love. You.
Love, Amy
Mark felt another fresh set of tears fall down his face as he finished the letter. Folding it back up, he held it close to his chest, hoping the beat of his heart would protect it. Looking around his room, he noticed all the things that were hers.
A football jersey. The set of studs. An old, pink sock. That random pair of jeans that he didn’t know how they got here. They were all hers.
They were all ghosts of hers, here to haunt him and remind him about what he lost.
