Chapter 3: Mage of Fairy Tail [NARRATOR]

"No."

Silence.

"Why is he doing that?" Wendy asks. Max, who is standing next to her, says thoughtfully, "He's refusing to fight the Master because he knows he can't win. In the other fights, he knew he would have a small chance, not a big one, but still, a chance. In a fight against Erza? Impossible."
"But he didn't have to win the other fights. Why would this time be any different?"

"Think about what Gray said. Lisanna tested his reflexes, Gajeel tested his tactic, and Gray tested his spirit. Personally, I think Erza is testing Romeo's reason. Refusing to fight her is his smartest move."

The purple flames covering Romeo's hands and forearms disperse as he faces Erza in her Fire Empress armor. "Why?" Erza asks.

"I'm....afraid." Romeo's voice cracks, and his hands curl into fists and start to tremble. Erza approaches him, and although she doesn't know it, says exactly what Gildarts said to Natsu many, many years ago. "'Theres nothing wrong with fear. After all, how else would we come to know our own weaknesses? And you need to know them....to become a stronger and gentler person.'"

Gildarts, who is also standing by Wendy, stiffens. He remembers those words....and who he said them to. The death of Natsu, although five years ago, is still painful for him and many others in the guild, including Romeo. If only Romeo knew where those words came from....

"Romeo, you are now officially a wizard of Fairy Tail."

Romeo looks up, his eyes full of surprise. Erza continues. "As a Fairy Tail Wizard, you must take an oath. Do you promise to protect all the citizens of Fiore, if the occasion calls need for it?"

"I promise."

"Do you promise to treat the guild as your family, as long as you remain a part of it?"

"I promise."

"And most of all, do you promise to live every single day with your life on the line, to have courage even when times get rough, and to keep fighting, no matter how much you bleed, and even if your tears run dry....do you promise to be a Fairy Tail wizard?"

A single tear runs down Romeo's cheek, and as he hurriedly wipes it away, he says, "I promise."

The trees erupt into cheers as everyone gathered around them run towards Romeo, congratulating him on his accomplishment.

Macou approaches him with a warm smile etched into his face, and he says, "Welcome to Fairy Tail, son." Romeo smiles and answers. "Thanks....dad!"
