He nodded with a sleepy smug look on his face as he backed up. He wasn't aware of anything behind him, and before she turned around to walk into the door, her own eyes watery, he stumbled over the spacing in the pavement, causing him loose his footing. She ran to him the moment he hit the ground. He grabbed at his head as he tried to sit up and coughed a little. He held his hand over his eyes as he leaned on his right shoulder, one knee bent, and let out the softest of sobs. She was kneeling beside him and could only grab him. His head fell onto her chest but soon nuzzled into her stomach as his tears continued. She couldn't help but let a few fall as her hands gripped onto him. His hair and ears were cold as she rubbed them gently, knowing he had some comfort thing with his ears. His hands latched onto her as he curled up in her lap, his tears marking her shirt. She didn't care, hers were doing the same.
"I...I can't tell you Lo," he started after taking a moment to catch his breath. She shushed him as she still pet his head.
"Penelope I am so sorry," he whispered with his eyes still shut. He had never felt the way he did at this moment. He was vulnerable, which always scared him. She knew he was a vulnerable person to begin with, the tough guy act was so pointless to her, but he had never cried in front of her.
"I was so fucking useless, you're the best thing that ever happened to me, you don't understand." More tears fell from his eyes. "I don't know why I did what I had done; I'll never understand why I did it."
She tried to hush him again, but it was no use.
"I've done nothing but try to forget you, I knew you were getting better than I ever gave you, but I couldn't get over the best thing I ever had." He had gotten up now and saw the tears on her face. She looked away from him, seeing his incredibly sad face caused more tears. When she could face him again, her hands cleared off his cheeks. He shut his eyes when she touched him.
"But you were good John, you know that," she spoke quietly.
He rolled his eyes. "Lo I should've given you so much better."
"John you gave me a lot, a lot for you, you were in a hard spot, and..."
"Yea, but I didn't have to do what I did," he was holding her hand now, and he couldn't help but wonder why no one had come to look for her.
"John," she shut her eyes, and he knew it still hurt her. He wanted to cry again but instead he hugged her.
His lips met her ear. "Penelope I still love you,"
She nodded, her hands held tightly on his jacket.
