It was Friday, the day I skipped school for the very first time. I distracted myself by playing with the zipper on my leather jacket.
"Nice outfit." Selena quietly commented, giving me a light smile.
I was wearing a maroon skater dress with the jacket and a pair of black boots. My lips were painted a dark red with lipstick.
Nervousness was overwhelming me. The choice of style was a confidence booster.
I also put my hair into a fishtail braid and wore sunglasses so I wasn't recognized by others, even if it was unlikely."Thanks, you too." I stared longingly at her light blue lace dress, a little on the short side, but she wore tights. It wasn't warm today.
"Should we go to the soccer field?" She pointed to western side of the fields. I asked why.
"He's on the team, as co-captain." I gaped. He actually played sports? I made up the fact that he was on the football team and I was surprised that he was actually athletic.I followed her to the stands, watching a few people in the crowds cheer, although it was only a practice session.
"Most of them shouted, "Go Mark!" or "Great block, Derrick!" I didn't hear any call outs on Aaron. When I first caught sight of him, he was slowly creeping up on the other team, stealing the ball and passing the it to a tall blond. It was weird, since the net was wide open and ready for him to shoot.
After the goal was counted, the blond gave Aaron a brotherly hug and I saw the shimmer of sweat glistening on Aaron's forehead. Soon enough, all the others on the team came in for a group hug and laughed together.
But, Aaron wasn't laughing. He was supposedly smiling, yet to me, it looked like he was pretending."The one who took the shot is Mark Lanning, captain of the team." Selena was filling me in on their names, but her voice droned out and my vision was set on Aaron.
Everything about him. The way his back arched a little, his eyes narrowed in on the other team, the lens of his glasses shining from the rays of sunshine. His brown hair caught most of my attention. It stayed up fashionably messy, although I could see how tangled it was from afar. When his eyes locked with mine, his eyebrows furrowed together, and I couldn't break the gaze. Aaron wasn't surprised, it was more of confusion. After looking at Selena and shaking his head, he turned away and talked to his teammates.
"What'd I tell you? One second he's laughing and the next he's glaring at you." The blond haired friend had tension knit into her eyes. She was definitely stressed out by him. I could tell she knew him in a different way than most did.
"Sorry for asking, but did you guys have history?"
"Does it seem like that?"
"Yeah."
"He was my first love."
I blankly looked back to him. Aaron and Selena? They could be a good couple. The thought was oddly discomforting and I erased it from my mind.
"Why?" I asked.
A sigh escaped her mouth. "Aaron was nice to me and I fell for it. I really used to think we had something special."
"It's the reason I moved to your school too, Hazel. It was his fault."
Sadness was fixed upon her face. I could tell she was still hurting.
