"Maya was always this spontaneous rebellious free soul when she was younger despite the life she had. She always made us smile and laugh and kept us from just settling into a cozy life or floating away or forgetting about that whole other part if the world where children didn't have two parents that gave them medicine when they were sick or talked to them about their problems. In fact, her mother was rarely there at all. It wasn't her fault, she was trying to keep her child fed and housed so as happy as she seemed, she lost herself in that mess and not only were we able to see that she didn't know who she was but the side of her we knew was there was visible. Lost. Then there was this period of who's gonna date who. And our adventures growing up. Her grades improving, and us breaking her down without even realizing it. Eventually she just left. She couldn't do it anymore- she couldn't take it anymore- take us, anymore. So she left us for a while until she came into one of our classes again. After a while we learned she was sick. She had no hope for so long and it was painful."
