Day Two - He Talks to Her, He Talks to Her Not

Waking up with anticipation, all his desires aimed towards a single mark. James was eager to see his picture perfect farmer's daughter, imagining her standing in the sunrise with hair hanging wildly. Tired as he was, James hurried over to the ranch as quickly as he could, that is after he had taken a proper shower and made certain that he looked his absolute best.

At the ranch, nothing seemed to be any different than any other day, save the hope of being able to see the girl of his dreams. Hope isn't wonderful. Rather than enjoying the anticipation, the chance of being able to witness her beauty one more time, James was annoyed. He had looked forward to seeing her so much that he forgot to enjoy anything else, the horses that had so often brought a smile to his face, or the calves that were adorable enough to consider giant puppies had no effect on his soured mood. Not yet to be realized, there would soon be fulfilment to his longing.

Mr. Billings walked out of the house, followed semi closely by his dear daughter Sarah. As though a huge burden had been lifted from his shoulders, James sighed with absolute relief. Upon walking over to James, Mr. Billings gave him a task to do.

"Go with Sarah down to the creek," James's heart skipped a beat, "there's a few breaks in the fence over there that she'll help you fix."

"Right away, Mr. Billings."

The order had not been his exact first interpretation. Although mending fences wasn't all that bad, there are many other things James would rather do at the creek, especially with Sarah tagging along. Taking the four-wheeler, they drove down together with her clinging tightly, arms around his waist. He said nothing. And why should he? This moment was far too priceless to ruin with conversation. At the creek Sarah showed him the area that had several holes in it, his response was simple.

"I can fix that."

"I hope so, the cattle have been getting out every now and then and I'm a little tired of hearing my father complain about it."

"No worries, I'll have this done in no time."

James was pretending as best he could to be the toughest, most prepared man that she'd ever seen. He undoubtedly fail. A lady of great popularity and public notice, Sarah had seen far greater men and James wouldn't stand a chance, or so he imagined.

Work went on as expected, Sarah took the four-wheeler leaving James stranded to walk back to the barn yard. She had a party to attend and James, being the gentleman that he was, or at least strived to be, insisted she take the four-wheeler and not be bothered by the thought of abandoning him. When finally all was accomplished and James finally reached the long lost place separated by rugged ATV terrain, he strode on home, hoping that another day might bring more a chance to converse with the farmer's daughter. Praying that another opportunity would come, he thanked God for every moment he had been given with her.
